The star linebacker isn’t worried about his contract
Voluntary workouts are the first phase in the new NFL offseason program, and it was close to a full house in Santa Clara for the San Francisco 49ers. Christian McCaffrey updated his health and declared himself ready to go, Brock Purdy reported amidst his current contract negotiation, and, of course, team captain and star linebacker Fred Warner reported to touch base with returning defensive coordinator Robert Saleh and set the tone for the defense before training camp.
Warner spoke glowingly about Saleh and his meeting with John Lynch, who explained how he believes Saleh’s scheme has grown. The 49ers completed their 30 visits with draft prospects, and Warner has been seen speaking with the youngsters while explaining his role during those visits, saying he only spoke to the prospects for a few seconds.
No offseason or press conference would be complete without a question about contract extensions. There’s no doubt the 49ers want Warner to retire as a 49er, and the former BYU linebacker will be compensated for his stellar play.
Do you get a sense that they’re gonna release some funds your way by the end of the summer, and is this something you want done before week one?
I mean, it seems like they’re releasing plenty of funds as it is already. You know, I get paid plenty already, but listen, that whole part of it, I know they, on my agent and the team, and that’ll all handle itself out.
I’m just ready to just go to work and be the best version of myself.
Warner is always going to give the correct responses to these questions and won’t be a distraction during any contract negotiation. As a leader of the team, Warner aims to lead on and off the field. The contract will be done with little resistance or social media antics.
It’s just a matter of when and not if for the 49ers and Warner.
