Well at least that “other” thing is done.
Trent Williams has missed training camp and if his contractual demands are not met, he may be prepared to miss some games as well. The San Francisco 49ers have just finished up Brandon Aiyuk’s dramatic negotiating and now everything can shift to Trent Williams watch.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler had some knowledge of the situation between the 49ers and and their Pro Bowl left tackle and shared it on Friday’s NFL Live. Per Fowler, Williams missing games is a very real threat. The entire quote transcribed below:
“The 49ers have work to do, I’m told Trent Williams is not happy and the threat of him missing games is real. A lot of times that’s a negotiating pull, I don’t sense it is right now. He’s made $150 million dollars in his career. He’s got no guaranteed money left on his deal. He’s the fourth-highest paid left tackle right now despite being the best the last few years and he feels like this could have been addressed a lot earlier and San Francisco sort of balked on it. He’s going to make them wait even longer. They have had some talks, nothing had heated up as of last night and this morning [Thursday Night/Friday Morning] but the 49ers have a couple days here before they officially start Week 1 on Monday, they are hopeful to make some progress. “
Most of the Williams disgruntlement comes from the the guaranteed money—or lack therof—coming for the remainder of the deal. John Lynch was hopeful that a resolution could happen soon.
There’s a been a lot of drama this offseason for the 49ers who are looking to go back to the Super Bowl. Hopefully they not only can get Williams taken care of but put all these potential distractions behind them when they host the New York Jets.
