The 49ers had Thornhill in the building last Thursday.
The San Francisco 49ers hosted free agent safety Juan Thornhill on a visit last week, but he will not be playing in the Bay Area next season.
Instead, Thornhill signed a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday, remaining in the AFC North after playing the last two seasons with the Cleveland Browns.
Only 29 years old, Thornhill has been a starter during all six of his years in the NFL. Being drafted in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, he played his first four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs before moving to the Browns for the last two seasons.
In 2024, playing in 11 games, the safety had 49 tackles, three pass breakups, and a tackle for loss, while allowing a 141.7 passer rating over 25 targets, according to Pro Football Reference.
While Thornhill would’ve fit a need for San Francisco at the beginning of free agent after the team lost Talanoa Hufanga, the 49ers made multiple additions at safety already, signing Richie Grant and Jason Pinnock to one-year deals in free agency.
Now, the 49ers have a safety room that consists of 2024 fourth-round pick Malik Mustapha, 2023 third-round pick Ji’Ayir Brown, George Odum, undrafted free agent Jaylen Mahoney, and the two free agent signings.
