Could it be good news for the San Francisco 49ers that Brock Purdy’s return is imminent?
The San Francisco 49ers were rumored to have a “very real” chance at signing former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones once he cleared waivers this past Monday.
On Wednesday morning, multiple national reporters confirmed that Jones is headed to the Minnesota Vikings, where he’ll presumably be the backup of former Niners quarterback Sam Darnold. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero said that Jones will be on Minnesota’s practice squad for now, which means it costs the Vikings next to nothing.
On Wednesday morning, ESPN said that multiple people believed Jones and the 49ers were a potential match:
I spoke to multiple people Tuesday who considered the 49ers a viable contender for free agent quarterback Daniel Jones, who could make his decision on a team soon. Whichever way this goes — the Vikings and Ravens have also shown interest, via ESPN’s Adam Schefter — the sense I get is the 49ers made an impression, with Jones intrigued by Kyle Shanahan’s track record with quarterbacks.
Kyle Shanahan wasn’t asked about Jones during his conference call on Monday. He did provide updates about Brock Purdy, who did some light throwing on Monday. That was a good sign, as the pain hadn’t come back from last week in his throwing shoulder. After not throwing Tuesday, Purdy will resume throwing during Wednesday’s session.
Shanahan said the plan was to let Purdy rest until Wednesday and then see how he feels. The team will take the exact same course throughout the week, and hopefully, Purdy will respond better this week than last.
If Brock can’t play, Shanahan said Brandon Allen will be under center again against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night “unless something crazy happens during the week.”
