Trey Lance will likely be looking for his third team this offseason as the Cowboys plan on moving on from the 49ers former first round pick
This was supposed to be the offseason where the San Francisco 49ers aren’t thinking about picking up Trey Lance’s fifth-year option because they’re making him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL.
Instead, since 2021, Lance has started the same number of games that Josh Dobbs has in the past two seasons. Injuries and losing a training camp battle to Sam Darnold cemented Lance’s fate with the 49ers. He had a chance for a fresh start with the Dallas Cowboys, but that chapter also appears to be closing.
Cowboys CEO Stephen Jones explained why Dallas went after Lance and why they’re likely to move on this offseason:
“We took a shot at Trey and wanted to do that. We think the world of Trey. But us having Dak signed up for the long-term, I think he’s probably going to be looking for something different.”
Brock Purdy made the most of his opportunity, helping the Niners avoid scrambling for a quarterback in the moment or during the following offseason of Lance’s rookie year.
Fast forward a few seasons, and Purdy is in the same seat that Lance was expected to be in, while Lance is destined to be a journeyman backup in the NFL if he’s fortunate enough to get a third chance.
San Francisco could use a backup…
