Ambry Thomas gets a fresh start with the Indianapolis Colts, where he’ll join former teammate Samuel Womack
Per the transaction wire, the Indianapolis Colts have claimed former San Francisco 49ers cornerback Ambry Thomas. The Niners’ former third-round pick missed 2024 due to injury and has been on the Injured Reserve since training camp.
It seems like a distant memory, but Thomas played 573 snaps for the 49ers defense in 2023, with 528 of those coming in the slot. Thomas was targeted 48 times, allowing a 68.8 percent completion percentage, 6.8 yards per target, and three touchdowns.
Pro Football Focus graded Thomas as the 33rd overall cornerback, above names like L’Jarius Sneed, Jaire Alexander, and Denzel Ward. But anybody who watched the games and the playoffs knew that Thomas was more lucky than good and a liability. It’s why the 49ers went in a different direction in the Super Bowl after starting Thomas in the Divisional Round and NFC Championship.
Thomas will join Samuel Womack in Indianapolis, where he’ll have a chance at a fresh start. Womack has been a consistent starter for the Colts this season. He’s played 510 snaps at cornerback, starting eight different games this season. Womack was pigeon-holed as a slot cornerback in San Francisco. Perhaps a change of scenery and position will bode well for Thomas in his new home.
