There are a few notable quarterback names missing from this list, but one sticks out above the rest.
Joe Montana, a fellow former 49ers quarterback, is nowhere to be found.
When Kaepernick’s decision to kneel during the National Anthem split the NFL world in 2016, Montana didn’t exactly jump to his defense. The Pro Football Hall of Famer called Kaepernick’s activism a “locker room distraction.”
“Everyone thinks it is the stance he took; one of the things you don’t look for is distractions in the locker room,” Montana said at the time. “You can go back to Bill Walsh and as soon as there were guys that weren’t fitting in what he was looking for, it didn’t matter how good you were. You weren’t on the team for very long.
“You have to have people who want the same thing, fighting for the same thing and willing to put in the time.”
Kaepernick, 35, still hasn’t taken the field for an NFL game since that 2016 season. But, he recently told Sports Illustrated that he’s still working out regularly in hopes of making an NFL comeback.
