Luke McCaffrey, the younger brother of San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey, was the final pick on Day 2 of the 2024 NFL Draft. He was selected by the Washington Commanders.
Shortly after the pick was announced, Christian went on social media to post a heartfelt message for his younger brother.
“Couldn’t be more proud of my brother @mccaffrey_luke,” the All-Pro running back wrote on X. “What a story. Bet on yourself every step of the way. What a story.”
After spending the first few seasons of his college career as a quarterback for Nebraska, Luke McCaffrey transferred to Rice and switched his position to wide receiver. That turned out to be a smart move for him.
In his final season at Rice, McCaffrey hauled in 71 passes for 992 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also had 117 rushing yards that year.
McCaffrey is hopeful that his 2023 season is just a sign of things to come.
“I think the biggest thing is the intangibles. The ability to work hard, the ability to come to the office and soak up knowledge,” McCaffrey told reporters. “I think they [the Commanders] have a great wide receiver room. I’m excited to get there and learn.”
Time will tell if the Commanders made the right pick betting on McCaffrey.
