A first quarter injury to Brock Purdy limited him to just four passing attempts in yesterday’s NFC Championship Game. But that didn’t stop him from taking responsibility for the team’s loss.
Speaking to the media after losing to the Eagles, the San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback admitted that it hurts to lose and saddens him that he let his teammates down. He said that he’s frustrated for himself and more sad that the other guys had to endure such a loss.
“It just hurts. I’m so sad for the older guys. Fred, Trent, George, Arik Armstead… For this to happen in the first drive really… I’m just frustrated but more sad than those guys than anything,” Purdy said.
Purdy’s injury came on the 49ers’ very first drive. He was sacked by Haason Reddick and injured his throwing arm in the process.
Backup Josh Johnson came in, but had to leave with an injury of his own in the second half. Purdy came back into the game, but only threw two more passes the entire game.
Unfortunately, the 49ers’ offense just didn’t have enough juice after Purdy got hurt. They wound up losing the game in a blowout and now head into an offseason with a lot of uncertainty.
Purdy’s inability to finish the game leaves the 49ers less than certain as to whether he can be their franchise quarterback moving forward.
Combine that with how up in the air the status of quarterbacks Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo is, and the 49ers could be dealing with a massive controversy in the months to come.
But for now, the 49ers can only lick their wounds and try to get ready for the offseason.
