The San Francisco 49ers 2024 lead rusher Jordan Mason is receiving plenty of trade interest this offseason. According to reports, the 49ers are apparently open to trading their backup running back after they could send wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk as well. With the 49ers gearing up for free agency, the team will most likely send Mason in a trade following his significant breakout season last year. Since the 49ers have Christian McCaffrey back in the lineup, the team should use Mason as bait to get some decent draft capital sooner rather than later as he’s healthy.
Originally selected as an undrafted rookie, the former Georgia Tech product has proven he could be a true No. 1 running back in the league one day. Mason did well when McCaffrey was out with an injury for the majority of the 2024 campaign, recording 789 yards for three touchdowns on 153 carries in six starts. ESPN’s Adam Schefter also mentioned Mason as a possible trade candidate during his appearance on The Pat McAfee Show mentioning they will have to send plenty of talent to other teams to field the kind of roster they want. However, the team could tender Mason for a first-round pick this offseason but it shouldn’t be surprising if they put him on the trade block and these two teams could be the top suitors.

New Sonic and Shadow?
The Baltimore Ravens have one of the best running backs in the league since signing Derrick Henry to a two-year deal last offseason. Jordan Mason won’t be taking Henry’s job but the Ravens could consider bringing him in to salvage the running back department since Keaton Mitchell hasn’t had much of an impact on the Baltimore run game. Justice Hill is one the fastest running backs in this unit but no one should expect him to be their long-term backup if it comes down to it.
He’s more of a screenplay specialist who grabs the ball from quarterback Lamar Jackson on quick slants. The Ravens need another runner like Henry to run the ball as often as he does since the team can’t afford to give him the ball very often. They want to ensure to keep Henry fresh for upcoming seasons as Henry still has his injury history despite being healthy for all of the 2024 season. Mason is a healthy scratch and given his age, he could emerge as their consistent running back on the field while they use Henry in the redzone.
Moving Next Door
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Chargers will probably wait until Mason receives a tender for a reasonable draft pick. Depending on what the 49ers do in this scenario, the Chargers should sign the restricted free agent to a lucrative deal. There’s no word on if the Chargers are bringing back J.K. Dobbins but it’s looking like they’re getting an upgrade either way. Gus Edwards is still a part of this roster but since he’s been underperforming, the Chargers will likely cut him.
Nobody loves running the football more than head coach Jim Harbaugh. Mason could easily have a phenomenal season under his philosophy. He is a capable runner until the Chargers might draft a new running back in the later rounds.
