Before the San Francisco 49ers kicked off their 2024 season against the New York Jets, they delivered some unfortunate news. Looking to return to the Super Bowl for the second year in a row, the team has announced star running back Christian McCaffrey will be unavailable. The reigning offensive player of the year is continuing to deal with Achilles and calf problems. Christian McCaffrey’s injury will likely be a continuing situation to monitor.
Breaking: 49ers Christian McCaffrey Out for Week 1
Chrisitan McCaffrey has been one of the best running backs in the NFL ever since he got drafted in 2017. Since arriving in San Francisco, McCaffrey’s presence has ushered in a new era of exciting football in San Francisco. After the 49ers failed to return to the Super Bowl in the 2021 season, the team acquired McCaffrey in 2022 from the Carolina Panthers. Carolina received three picks in the 2023 NFL draft and a fifth-round pick in 2024 in exchange for McCaffrey.
Since the acquisition, McCaffrey has played some of the best football of his career. McCaffrey had over 1,210 scrimmage yards along with 10 total touchdowns for San Francisco in 11 games for the 49ers, helping to propel their offense to an NFC Championship appearance. He followed that up with 2,023 scrimmage yards and 21 total touchdowns to earn Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2023. With his production in Shanahan’s offense alongside Brandon Aiyuk, George Kittle, and Brock Purdy; the San Francisco 49ers were able to return to the Super Bowl before losing once again to the Chiefs.
How will the 49ers adapt without McCaffrey?
McCaffrey’s production will not be easy to replace. Along with the running game, McCaffrey has been an asset to Brock Purdy’s production as a receiver in the backfield. With Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams both holding out over contract negotiations, the San Francisco 49ers could be in trouble. With Robert Saleh coaching a talented New York Jets defense, the 49ers can’t afford any miscues. Due to McCaffrey’s absence, the 49ers will need a big game from third-year running back Jordan Mason. Mason’s average of 5.6 yards per carry does lead to some signs of encouragement.
