The San Francisco 49ers didn’t finish in the top-10 in many categories during a disappointing 2024 season. One of the top-10 finishes they did secure is rather dubious.
According to the Action Network, which calculated the fines accumulated by NFL teams last season, the 49ers were the ninth most-fined team in the league.
San Francisco’s players were fined $418,655 in 2024, but there was one main culprit for more than half of that amount: linebacker De’Vondre Campbell.
The Action Network had Campbell down as the No. 10 most-fined player in the league last season after he was suspended for the final three games for quitting in the middle of San Francisco’s Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
Campbell, who started at Will linebacker alongside Fred Warner all season, was benched in favor of LB Dre Greenlaw when Greenlaw returned from an Achilles tear he suffered in Super Bowl LVIII. When the team asked Campbell to enter the game in the second half, he refused and instead was thrown off the sideline and sent to the locker room.
The 49ers could have released Campbell, but they opted to maximize his punishment by issuing a suspension that cost him game checks for the final three games of the regular season. That’s where he stacked up his $261,666 in fines, which accounted for 62.5 percent of the 49ers’ total fines last season.
If we remove Campbell’s fines, the 49ers amassed just $156,989 in fines last season, which would’ve ranked 24th in the NFL.
