Luke Gifford played 532 snaps for the Titans in 2024. He was also on every special teams unit.
The San Francisco 49ers are committing to special teams this offseason as they revamp their roster. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported the 49ers have agreed to terms with “veteran special teams ace” Luke Gifford on a one-year contract.
Gifford played 532 snaps for the Tennesee Titans in 2024 but did not play a single defensive snap until Week 13. He started in Weeks 14, 15, 17, and 18. But Gifford was on every special teams unit for every game during the season.
He finished with 10 special teams tackles and missed two. For what it’s worth, Gifford’s PFF grade on special teams was 83.8. He has consistently played on special teams since signing with the Dallas Cowboys in 2019 after going undrafted. So, it’s a testament that Gifford has continued to find work in the NFL as a special teamer.
Although we do not know much about Gifford, his status as an undrafted free agent who only plays special teams tells us something about his character.
Gifford joins a linebacking group that includes Fred Warner, Dee Winters, Jalen Graham, Curtis Robinson, and Tatum Bethune. This move does not prevent the 49ers from drafting or signing a linebacker they believe can start alongside Warner.
