Tre Brown looks like he’s being brought in to compete as a starter at cornerback. The former Seattle Seahawk started in 2023, before being phased out of the lineup in 2024

According to one Seahawks beat reporter, “Tre Brown was an earnest and stand-up guy to me in the Seahawks locker room. Injuries and the team drafted Woolen then Witherspoon pushed him down the depth chart. He’s got a strong game, strong mentality. Just needs the opportunity. Wish him the best.”
Brown, listed at 5’10”, 188 pounds, was drafted in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by Seattle. He played 391 snaps for the Seahawks this past season, with 277 coming out wide at cornerback. It’s worth noting that Brown was the starter through Week 6 but did not play many defensive snaps after that. Brown played on the punt return team for Seattle and occasionally played on the other coverage units.
There isn’t any injury history about Brown, so he must have been a healthy scratch. In 2023, before the Seahawks changed coaching staffs, Brown played 603 snaps defensively and only 25 defensive snaps. Of those, 554 were out wide at cornerback. That would suggest the 49ers are bringing Brown in to compete for a starting job opposite of Renardo Green and be the third cornerback when the defense is in nickel once Deommodore Lenoir slides inside.
Brown allowed 68.4 percent of his targets to be completed for 10.5 yards per target this past season. Both of those numbers are well below average and sound like the reason he did not make it two months as the starter. In 2023, Brown faired a bit better, allowing a completion percentage of 57.5 percent at 7.8 yards per target — still below average, but a bit better.
Hopefully, the 49ers are getting a steal and someone who did not fit in with one organization after it prioritized different players. There is no information about Brown’s contract terms yet.
