The 49ers are keeping around talent they believe worth investing in.
The San Francisco 49ers announced 11 free agents to Reserve/Future contracts Monday afternoon:
DL Jonathan Garvin
OL Sebastian Gutierrez
DL Tarron Jackson
OL Zack Johnson
CB Chase Lucas
S Jaylen Mahoney
QB Tanner Mordecai
OL Drake Nugent
WR Terique Owens
TE Mason Pline
WR Trent Taylor
Each player finished on the team’s practice squad in 2024. The front office must’ve seen enough promising signs from the players above to keep them in the organization and through the offseason for another year.
The most telling part move is who the 49ers elected not to bring back, perhaps signaling positions of interest this offseason.
Kyle’s update, Tuesday, January 7, 2:30 p.m. PT:
The 49ers announced the signings of offensive lineman Isaac Alarcon, wide receivers Russell Gage and Isaiah Hodgins, and offensive tackle Jalen McKenzie. Hodgins and McKenize are new, while both offensive linemen finished the season on the practice squad.
Hodgins was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He had previously spent the previous two years with the New York Giants, where he started 14 games and caught 60 passes for 634 yards, including seven touchdowns. Hodgins was on the Giants practice squad for much of 2024, appearing in only three games.
McKenzie was an undrafted free agent out of the 2022 NFL Draft. He started his career with the Tennessee Titans before spending time with the Seattle Seahawks, Las Vegas Raiders, New England Patriots, and New York Giants. That was McKenzie’s last stop, where he signed to the Giants practice squad on December 11.
Running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn, defensive tackle Jade Nesta Silvera, and wide receivers Ronnie Bell and Russell Gage were not retained from the practice squad.
Rookie running back Isaac Guerendo tweeted that his ACL is intact. Jordan Mason is a restricted free agent coming off a high-ankle sprain and a shoulder injury. And that Christian McCaffrey guy.
