The 49ers officially ended Trent Williams’ season and signed Matt Hennessy away from the Falcons.
The San Francisco 49ers made a pair of roster moves on Thursday, placing left tackle Trent Williams on the injured reserve and signing center Matt Hennessy off the Atlanta Falcons practice squad to fill the open spot left on the roster. Williams is out for the season with an ankle injury. It’s worth wondering if Williams would have a chance to return if San Francisco made a deep playoff run, but obviously that’s not on the table this season. Hennessy is the second offensive lineman the Niners have signed off another team’s practice squad this week.
Hennessy was drafted in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Temple by the Falcons. Hennessy sat behind Alex Mack as a rookie before the veteran joined the 49ers for the final season of his career. Following Mack’s departure, Hennessy moved up the depth chart into a starting role. He started all 17 Falcons games in 2021, but was demoted while dealing with injuries throughout the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
After missing the entire 2023 season with an injury, Hennessy hit free agency and inked a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles. However, he failed to crack the regular-season roster and ultimately inked a deal to return to Atlanta on the practice squad. Hennessy was promoted to the roster for four games following some injuries to the Falcons offensive line, but he has not made any starts and was subsequently waived and returned to the practice squad.
