This move comes after the 49ers will not activate Jon Feliciano from the IR
The San Francisco 49ers announced the signing of Cameron Erving, a former top 20 selection in the 2015 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns.
Erving played 406 snaps as a rookie nearly nine years ago with the Browns, with the majority of those snaps coming at left and right guard. The following season, he switched to center, where he played 659 snaps. He also played 41 snaps at right tackle.
Erving has played just about everything. In 2018, he started every game at left guard, playing 963 snaps. The next season, Erving played 584 snaps at left tackle — which was the position he played at Florida State. That year, in 2019, would be the last time Erving played starter-level snaps in the NFL.
Erving has bounced around during his 10-year NFL career, playing with the Browns (2015-16), Kansas City Chiefs (2017-19), Dallas Cowboys (2020), Carolina Panthers (2021-22), New Orleans Saints (2023) and Houston Texans (2024) this season. He’s started 58 games and appeared in 98 games. Erving was released from Houston’s practice squad on November 20.
This move comes after the 49ers will keep Jon Feliciano on the injured reserve after his knee did not respond the way the team had hoped. So, Erving, at least, gives them another body during practice. At best, he can provide depth during games and a potential option along the interior for Jake Brendel or Aaron Banks.
