Assessing the 49ers quarterback position now that 2024 is complete
2023 was a sensational season for Brock Purdy. Purdy threw for 4,280 yards, a 49er single-season record, without playing in the season finale against the Los Angeles Rams. Boasting a 31-11 TD/INT ratio and a 9.6 YPA, Purdy played efficient, super football. From a numbers and efficiency standpoint, it would be difficult for Purdy to duplicate his 2023 season.
Fast-forward to the 2024 season, which began with an offseason/training camp holdout from Brandon Aiyuk. Purdy was set to lead the 49ers back with a deep playoff run. However, Purdy would have to do so without the reigning Offensive Player of the Year. Given that the 49ers added two receivers to the NFL Draft, the feeling was that the team was ready to add more to Purdy’s plate with separators at the position.
2024 would prove to be trying for the 49ers and their offense, to say the least. How did the quarterback position look for the team in 2024?
Brock Purdy – 15 games, 537 dropbacks, 300/455, 65.9%, 3,864 yards, 8.5 YPA, 20 TD, 12 INT, 82.4 offensive grade, 76.3 passing grade.
Consider this. In two fewer games than in 2023, Purdy dropped back 39 more times and attempted 11 more passes. Purdy’s big-time throw percentage fell from 5.8% (27 BTT) to 3.1% (15 BTT) in 2024. Even with the increase in dropbacks and attempts, Purdy’s turnover-worthy plays fell from 3.4% (18 TWP) to 3.0% (17 TWP).
There’s no doubt the 49ers’ offense regressed, particularly in the red zone; Purdy shouldered more of the responsibility in 2024. Purdy’s rushing ability was on display in 2024. It’s up to you whether you believe it’s a result of the pass protection or lack of separation from the 49ers receivers. On fewer snaps, Purdy’s rushing numbers rose from 144 to 323 yards.
The conversation turns to how much will Purdy sign for this offseason. Yes, there were some shaky moments, but Purdy has proven himself more than capable and deserving of an extension dictated by the market and other quarterbacks with less on their resume.
Josh Dobbs – 2 games, 52 dropbacks, 32/47, 68.1%, 361 yards, 7.7 YPA, 2 TD, 2 INT, 56.7 offensive grade, 61.1 passing grade.
The “passtronaut” stepped in for Purdy during Week 17 against Detroit. The discussion about Dobbs is whether or not the former Vikings and Cardinals quarterback should have started in Week 12 against Green Bay, when the 49ers were still in playoff contention.
Dobbs is a capable backup. One could argue it didn’t matter which quarterback started since the Packers ran all over the 49ers’ defense, but it calls into question the thought process by the 49ers coach. Will the 49ers retain Dobbs to back up Purdy in 2025?
Brandon Allen – 2 games, 33 dropbacks, 17/30, 56.7%, 199 yards, 6.6 YPA, 1 TD, 1 INT, 41.1 offensive grade, 44.5 passing grade.
Allen is a Shanahan favorite. The 49ers coach is enamored with Allen’s grasp of the offense and pocket ability. In Week 12, Allen didn’t necessarily play poorly. His interception should be attributed to Deebo Samuel.
The staying power of a capable backup is tangible. Due to its longevity, it’s sometimes better to be a backup than a starter.
Will the 49ers address the situation behind Purdy with a draft pick? Is there an available backup in free agency? What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments!
