The San Francisco 49ers tried to go big-game hunting during the offseason for another star wideout.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the 49ers called the Minnesota Vikings and asked about Justin Jefferson before he signed his mega-extension with the team. They were doing their due diligence to make sure he wasn’t available for trade.
There’s no reason not to call but the Vikings gave their answer when they signed him to a four-year $140 million extension that includes $110 million of guaranteed money.
They see Jefferson as a big part of the present and the future as they try to return to contending for a Super Bowl.
The 49ers already have Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk at wide receiver though the latter hasn’t reported to the team yet since he wants a new contract. Both have been involved in trade rumors as teams have been interested in their services.
The 49ers are coming off an overtime loss in Super Bowl LVIII and will try to return to the big game next season. They’re well-positioned to do it with all the star talent they have all over the field.
