The startling revelation that world-renown video game streamer and content creator “Dr Disrespect” had inappropriate conversations with a minor several years ago is having ripple effects in more than just the gaming and streaming sphere. It’s now crossing over into the NFL.
According to SFGATE, the San Francisco 49ers – who have done numerous promotions with the streaming icon through the years – confirmed that they will no longer be working with him moving forward.
“We take these developments seriously and will not be working with him going forward,” the team told the outlet.
Herschel “Guy” Beahm, known by his username Dr Disrespect, was the face of the streaming platform Twitch for years until his sudden permanent ban from the platform in 2020. But he has maintained a massive audience on other streaming platforms since and is a massive San Francisco 49ers fan.
At the 2022 NFL Draft, the 49ers even invited him to present one of their draft picks.
But this week Dr Disrespect took to X and admitted that his ban from Twitch in 2020 related to an incident several years prior where he had private conversations with “an individual minor” with those conversations leaning “too much in the direction of being inappropriate.”
Dr Disrespect has vehemently denied that anything illegal occurred or would have occurred had the conversations continued. He said that when Twitch canceled his multi-million dollar streaming contract, he reached arbitration with the company and never had any criminal charges filed against him.
“Nothing illegal happened, no pictures were shared, no crimes were committed, I never even met the individual,” he wrote. “I went through a lengthy arbitration regarding a civil dispute with Twitch and that case was resolved by a settlement. Let me be clear, it was not a criminal case against me and no criminal charges have ever been brought against me.”
In the days since the allegations and subsequent statement came to light, a number of companies that have worked with Dr Disrespect have cut ties with him.
He may remain a 49ers fan, but the 49ers are no longer any fans of his.
