Before the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft started, the 49ers made an important decision regarding Christian McCaffrey’s contract.
According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the 49ers restructured McCaffrey’s contract to create $8.576 million in salary cap space.
This doesn’t change the fact that McCaffrey is under contract through the 2025 season.
After restructuring McCaffrey’s deal, the 49ers picked up wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk’s fifth-year option for the 2024 season.
Prior to the start of Day 2 of the draft, per source:
The 49ers restructured the contract of RB Christian McCaffrey to create $8.576M in salary cap space.
The Raiders restructured the contract of OLB Chandler Jones, creating $5.068M in cap space.

McCaffrey was outstanding for the 49ers last season, racking up 1,210 yards from scrimmage and 10 touchdowns in just 11 games.
An argument can be made that McCaffrey saved the 49ers’ season in 2022. Once he joined the team, everything started clicking for Kyle Shanahan’s offense.
The 49ers have to be amped up about McCaffrey’s outlook for the 2023 season. With a full year under his belt, he could put up career-best numbers. That is, of course, if he stays healthy.
