The 49ers are slated to receive 3 fourth round comp picks thanks to the contracts Charvarius Ward, Talanoa Hufanga, and Aaron Banks signed in free agency
The San Francisco 49ers haven’t made the splash that some fans may have hoped, as we’re a week into free agency.
Instead, nine free agents signed elsewhere, a couple of starters along the defensive line were released, and Deebo Samuel is headed to D.C. Questions about whether the direction of the 49ers is headed in the right direction. However, it’s tough to fault a team turning over the roster after a disappointing season fresh off a Super Bowl.
Today, we’ll look at Over the Cap’s projections for compensatory picks in the 2026 NFL Draft. We’ll reference “CFAs” or compensatory free agents. Those are determined by a formula that includes salary, playing time, and postseason honors. It’s also worth noting that not every free agent who signs or walks is covered in the formula.
As of writing, the 49ers are currently protected to receive three comp picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, and each of those lands somewhere in the fourth round. That’s for the contracts of Charvarius Ward, Aaron Banks, and Talanoa Hufanga.
Richie Grant, Jason Pinnock, and Tre Brown’s contracts don’t qualify as incoming free agents. The same is true for Elijah Mitchell, Isaac Yiadom, and Brandon Allen.
Jaylon Moore, Dre Greenlaw, and Josh Dobbs’s contracts cancel out Mac Jones, Luke Farrell, and Demarcus Robinsons’s deals. That’s how Over the Cap came to the projection of four comp picks.
