San Francisco 49ers punter Mitch Wishnowsky was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Month for September. Wishnowsky finished the month with 11 punts and a net average of 43.4 yards. Eight of Wishnowsky’s 11 punts landed inside of the opponent’s 20-yard line.
No other punter has more punts that have landed inside of the 20-yard line. But, perhaps, more importantly, the 49ers have only allowed 19 punt return yards this season. Wishnowsky’s net average of 43.4 yards ranks sixth in the NFL.
Against the Packers, Wishnowsky averaged 53.3 yards per punt, with three of those landing inside of Green Bay’s 20-yard line. He also had six of his ten kickoffs go for touchbacks.
Against Philadelphia, Wishnowsky pinned the Eagles inside their 10-yard line on two separate occasions. The 49ers flipped one of those punts into a touchdown drive that took almost nine minutes off the clock and ended up being the deciding drive for the game.
