Plus, updates on a pair of rookies.
The San Francisco 49ers returned to the practice field Monday and were in full pads for the first time. Head coach Kyle Shanahan provided injury updates after several players sat out.
There is no timetable for edge rusher Drake Jackson to return, but he’ll miss all of training camp:
“Those are big surgeries. They’re tough to come back from. You never know how they’re going to react. We always know there’s a possibility to take a long time, and it’s taken a long time.”
If Jackson stays on the PUP list, he will not count toward the 53-man roster, so the 49ers don’t have to rush him back. But the longer he remains out, the further down the depth chart he falls, and the only way for him to improve is by being on the field.
Spencer Burford still has one more doctor to speak with. The 49ers’ starting right guard broke his hand during Saturday’s practice, and it was heavily cast during Monday’s practice. Shanahan said he’ll have an update the next time he speaks with the media.
Rookie wide receiver Jacob Cowing will likely be out for around ten days with his hamstring injury. Wideout Tay Martin is also out with a hamstring injury and is on the same timeline as Cowing. Rookie running back Isaac Guerendo’s hamstring injury is more severe. He’ll likely be out for several weeks, per Shanahan.
Here are the players who didn’t practice on Monday:
Brandon Aiyuk
Christian McCaffrey
Kyle Juszczyk
Guerendo
Jon Feliciano
Jake Brendel
Burford
Cowing
Martin
Nick Bosa
Ricky Pearsall and George Kittle were in pads but did not partake in any team drills. Shanahan said they wanted to throw Pearsall out there today, see how his body responds this evening, and he’ll likely practice tomorrow.
