Catching up on the news around the NFL on Day 3 of free agency.
The language national reporters are using when they’re referencing which deals were signed is comical. For example, “Shortly after being released by the 49ers, DT Maliek Collins reached agreement with the Cleveland Browns.”
We’re all adults. We know that tampering happens. Let’s acknowledge it and move on. Here’s a look at all of the deals from Wednesday that we’ll pretend took place during the previous 48 hours.
Kyle’s update, 3:40 p.m. PT:
- The Jets have released LB C.J. Mosley. Before last season, Mosley hadn’t missed a game since 2019. He turns 33 in June.
The problem is the type of injury Mosley is coming off. Mosley dealt with a nagging toe injury and a “painful herniated disk in his neck.” Nobody has ever doubted what Mosley is capable of on a football field. He had nine tackles in Week 1 against the Niners and had a pressure. Robert Saleh knows what he’s capable of, and the 49ers gave a sizable hole at linebacker.
But Mosley likely has an opportunity to “cash out” one final time and figures to have offers if his medicals check out that would be out of the 49ers’ price range. But familiarity with Saleh and the chance to play next to Fred Warner are two selling points other teams don’t have.
Is the injury worth it? Or are the 49ers serious about a youth movement? We will find out.
