Safety Jaylen Mahoney figures to fill in in the event of an emergency or on special teams for Talanoa Hufanga, while DT Evan Anderson adds depth at defensive tackle
The San Francisco 49ers announced a pair of transactions ahead of Thursday night’s matchup against their rival Seattle Seahawks.
Defensive tackle Evan Anderson was elevated from the practice squad. Jordan Elliott was ruled out. That left Maliek Collins, Kalia Davis, and Kevin Givens as the only active interior lineman. So the 49ers need a big body, and Anderson more than fills that need. Unlike last week, there will be no T.Y. McGill in limited action. The Niners are likely expecting a pass-heavy approach from an offense that has the lowest run rate in the NFL.
Safety Jaylen Mahoney was the other player elevated from the practice squad. Talanoa Hufanga is headed to the injured reserve after tearing ligaments in his wrist, so the Niners can stand to use help on special teams. Malik Mustapha will take over as Hufanga’s full-time starter. He was playing a heavy dose of special teams. So, Mahoney figures out how to take some of that special team work from Mustapha.
