The San Francisco 49ers coaching staff has undergone a slew of changes this offseason, and now another could be on the horizon.
Sport Illustrated’s Albert Breer on Sunday reported 49ers assistant head coach Brandon Staley is interviewing for the New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator position under new head coach Kellen Moore.
Staley was also an internal candidate for the 49ers’ defensive coordinator job. He originally interviewed for the 49ers DC job in 2024, but wound up landing an assistant head coach job where he helped out on the defensive side of the ball.
It was unclear if he’d hold the same role in 2025 with Robert Saleh running the defense. Saleh also hired long-time NFL defensive coordinator Gus Bradley to help out on the coaching staff.
Staley spent one season as the Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator before landing a job as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. His DC tenure went exceedingly well, but the defenses he’s been involved with since have struggled.
The Chargers never finished higher than 21st in points allowed under Staley, and they were never better than 20th in yards allowed. Last season, San Francisco’s defense finished 29th in points allowed after finishing No. 3 in 2023.
