De’Vondre Campbell refused to go into the game after two linebackers in front of him went down with an injury. We’ve probably seen the last of Campbell in a 49ers uniform.
One of the strangest incidents occurred during Thursday’s game. San Francisco 49ers linebacker De’Vondre Campbell refused to go into the game.
The return of Dre Greenlaw—objectively one of the best players on the team—meant somebody would give up snaps. The logical choice was Campbell, who had struggled in coverage and in the previous matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.
Greenlaw was awesome. He led the team in run stops in the first half. For a player coming off an Achilles injury, you would have had no idea.
Greenlaw came out of the game for precautionary reasons. Shanahan confirmed that Greenlaw left the game due to Achilles tightness and a knee issue, but there was zero concern about any potential tear. Shanahan said Dre was “unbelievable.”
Greenlaw told reporters, “If I was healthy, I’d play another game tomorrow. I’m sore. Played a lot of plays. It’s expected. Knee is sore. Same side of surgery so everything is probably tighter. We have 10 days to next game to get range of motion and confidence back in it.”
That is the player the 49ers put into the starting lineup.
Once Greenlaw left, the 49ers attempted to put Campbell in during the third quarter, but Campbell went into the locker room, telling the coaches he didn’t want to play. Shanahan said that was the first time a player had ever told him he did not want to play.
Shanahan was ticked off and said, “We’ll figure something out,” when asked if the 49ers would release Campbell. However, he doesn’t feel like he’s lost the locker room:
“I haven’t lost anybody. Somebody who doesn’t wanna play football, it’s pretty simple. I think our team and myself, we know how we feel about that, so I don’t think we need to talk about that anymore.”
Charvarius Ward, one of the most brutally honest players on the team, believes Campbell will be cut:
“He’s a professional. He’s been playing for a long time. If he didn’t want to play, he shouldn’t have dressed out. He could’ve told me that before the game. So I feel like that was some sucker sh*t that he did. It definitely hurt the team. Cause you know, Dee [Winters] went down, and we needed a linebacker. And I think Flan [Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles] was banged up, too. So, for him to do that, that’s some sucker stuff to me. He’s probably going to get cut soon.”
On a team that has experienced an unreal amount of trauma, you turn your back on them because you lost your spot to a better player. There is no decision to be made for Campbell. You can’t have that on your roster. Not after what the 49ers have been through.
George Kittle echoed a similar sentiment:
“I’ve never been around anybody that’s done that, and I hope I’m never around anyone that does that again.”
As did Deommodore Lenoir:
I call you brothers deeper than the surface, blood make us related loyalty make us family I’ll never quit on ma brother no matter what happen cut from a different cloth, It can be 50 vs 1 I’m standing on all 10
