Just a few months ago, the San Francisco 49ers made a bold move up in the 2021 NFL draft to select quarterback Trey Lance.
The move appears to have paid off as the hype surrounding the rookie quarterback is starting to reach an all-time high. However, as good as Lance has been in camp thus far, Jimmy Garoppolo has reportedly played even better.
49ers general manager John Lynch said Jimmy G took his game to another level after being pushed by the rookie quarterback. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has maintained that Jimmy G is the team’s starting quarterback.
Fans didn’t want to believe that news after all of the Trey Lance hype. However, Shanahan clearly wasn’t lying.
On Tuesday night, the team released its first depth chart and guess who sat in the starting quarterback role?
That’s right: Jimmy G.
Check it out.

Over the past two weeks, reporters who cover the 49ers have been gushing about the former North Dakota State star. One 49ers beat writer, David Lombardi, said the combination of Lance and the No. 1 offense “doesn’t feel fair.”
And yet, Jimmy G retained the starting role and looks to be locked in as the team’s starter heading into the 2021 season.
We’ll have to wait and see if he can hold onto the role throughout the season.
