Nicholas Petit-Frere will need to be claimed, while Jake Tonges and Austen Pleasants signed their tenders
The San Francisco 49ers announced offensive tackle Austen Pleasants and tight end Jake Tonges signed their one-year exclusive rights tenders. This was somewhat of a formality or foregone conclusion.
These moves will not prevent or impact what San Francisco does in the NFL Draft next weekend, nor will they exclude them from adding a veteran offensive tackle or tight end after the draft.
Speaking of offensive tackles, the Tennessee Titans waived former third-round pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, Nicholas Petit-Frere. Since he was waived, there’s an opportunity for the 49ers to claim the former Titan. Petit-Frere’s cap number in 2025 is $3.6 million. It’s another way for the Niners to find competition for Colton McKiitz and add depth after they lost Jaylon Moore in free agency.
There’s a reason Petit-Frere was waived. Since entering the NFL, his 10% pressure rate allowed is the second-highest among 92 tackles with at least 500 pass blocking snaps. The year 2023 was a rough one statistically. Last season wasn’t much better in pass protection. Sports Info Solutions had Petit-Frere allowing a whopping 11 sacks. His blown block percentage was comfortably the worst in the NFL, and 2.7 percent higher than McKivitz’s which was the eighth-worst in the NFL.
As you might expect, Petit-Frere was much better against the run. The former Ohio State prospect turns 26 in September. He’d be a fallback option if the 49ers aren’t able to land an offensive tackle in next week’s NFL Draft.
