The 49ers on Tuesday announced two changes in their front office to replace the loss of assistant general manager Adam Peters. Instead of using one person to fill Peters’ shoes, San Francisco promoted Tariq Ahmad and RJ Gillen to Director of Player Personnel. They’ll both hold that title.
Ahmad has been with the 49ers for a decade and over the last three seasons held down the director of college scouting role. According to a release from the team, Ahmad’s duties in that job included managing “the daily operations of the college scouting department and their evaluations of players among colleges to help prepare for the Draft and free agency.”
Getting him in place in time for the combine and draft preparations makes a ton of sense, and retaining him gives the 49ers’ a familiar voice in the room to help build out their roster.
Gillen was the director of pro scouting for the 49ers last season in his ninth year with the team. In that role he “managed the daily operations of the pro scouting department and their evaluations of players among the various professional leagues to help prepare the club for acquisitions through free agency, trades and the daily player transactional movement,” per the team. He also did advanced scouting and assisted the 49ers’ coaching staff.
