The best player in college softball is transferring after the 2024 season.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that National Player of the Year NiJaree Canady is set to enter the NCAA’s transfer portal and move on to a new school for the 2025 season.
It’s pretty stunning news.
“Stunning softball news: Stanford P NiJaree Canady, the National Player of the Year, entered the transfer portal today. Whatever a softball bidding war looks like, it is likely underway between the top programs in the sport,” Stewart Mandel of The Athletic reports.

Some big schools are already being mentioned as possible destinations:
It’s not yet clear where Canady will be heading, but one could imagine that it would likely be an SEC power like Texas, who spent much of the year ranked #1, or Oklahoma, who just won a fourth consecutive national championship.
The Stanford Cardinal star was the 2024 USA Softball Player of the Year. She led the country with a 0.73 ERA and 337 strikeouts.
As Mandel said, a bidding war is almost surely underway for her services in 2025 and beyond.
Where do you think the best softball player in the country should end up?
