Initially drafted by the Bucks, Patrick McCaw was traded to the Warriors for cash on draft night. The 38th pick in the 2016 NBA draft had earned himself a great admirer in the late Jerry West. At the time, The Logo had stated that the league would regret not selecting the UNLV alumnus.
Utilized mostly as a shooting guard and small forward, McCaw occasionally stepped in for an injured Kevin Durant in the 2016-17 season. Winning a championship in his rookie season, the St. Louis native accounted for valuable contributions, especially during the playoffs.
Defending tthe Warriors would repeat the following season, as McCaw earned his second consecutive title. However, this also marked the end of his stint in the Bay Area, given the front office refused to match the two-year $6 million deal offered to him via the arch-rivals Cavaliers.
What Happened to Patrick McCaw of the Warriors?
Three-Peating With the Raptors
McCaw’s period in Cleveland was limited to him playing a mere three games before he was shipped to Toronto. With the basketball gods continuing to bless him, the 6-foot-7 McCaw ended up winning his third consecutive championship, this time with the Raptors.
McCaw joined the likes of Steve Kerr and Pep Saul, becoming the third player to three-peat with different teams. Re-signing with the Raptors, the following years witnessed the 29-year-old struggle with multiple knee injuries, and he was eventually waived by the team in 2021.
Playing for the G League
Absent from the scene for close to a year, McCaw ended up in the G League. The three-time champion played for the Delaware Blue Coats, an affiliate of the Philadelphia 76ers. Averaging 5.8 points, 2.1 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.4 steals on 41% shooting in the 2022-23 regular season, McCaw won his first G League championship.
It appeared as if fortune followed McCaw to all his destinations, including the G League. Deciding to go international with the BNXT League, the NBA and G League champion signed with Belgium’s Filou Oostende. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned due to visa issues. Eventually, McCaw re-joined the Blue Coats and has been with them ever since.
Possibility of a reunion with the Warriors?
Beginning his pro basketball journey in the Bay Area, McCaw was part of one of the greatest teams assembled. Finding himself on a roster that also comprised of Durant, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Andre Iguodala, the Warriors did manage to make a huge mark.
McCaw’s athleticism and defensive abilities helped the Dubs at times. Fast-forward to today and the Warriors find themselves in a challenging situation. Struggling on multiple fronts, Kerr and his crew have a .500 record.
Coming off a dynastic run, the franchise appears directionless, not having a blueprint for the present or future. Though Curry and Green continue to run things, they are not getting younger anytime soon. On the other hand, the young talents on the roster, barring Jonathan Kuminga, haven’t been the most impressive.
Thus, does bringing in someone like McCaw ease things, at least temporarily? The former Warriors guard possesses a championship pedigree and is familiar with coach Kerr’s system. Nevertheless, his numbers have remained nothing short of stagnant all these years.
