Over the past two seasons, there has been much chatter about Golden State Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins and his future in the Bay Area. Many believed the former Minnesota Timberwolf failed to capitalize after winning his first championship in 2022. His inconsistent play was highly concerning.
Several reports in the media even suggested that Golden State planned to package Wiggins in a trade. While these rumors continue to make the rounds, the Canadian native has been silently putting in the work, showcasing his wingman abilities. In the 25 games Wiggins has played so far, he is averaging 17.5 PPG, 4.4 RPG, and 2.4 APG, shooting 45.9% from the field, including 42.6% from the three-point line. Certainly an improvement from his previous two seasons, the 2022 All-Star is looking to take his game to the next level.
Warriors Witnessing an Andrew Wiggins Comeback
Wiggins’ Impact on the Dubs
In his sixth season with the Bay Area franchise, Wiggins continues to be an integral part of the roster. Though the 29-year-old’s career has seen its share of highs and lows, he continues to have a promising future. What separates the 2015 ROTY from the rest is his two-way ability.
There is no denying that Wiggins played a critical role in the Warriors 2021-22 championship run. So much so that there is a common consensus that he was the second option next to Stephen Curry in the 2022 championship run. The same season, the 6-foot-7 forward made his first All-Star appearance.
Wiggins’ capacity to contribute on both ends of the floor makes him a valuable piece for the Dubs. Notably, during the 2022 Finals, Wiggins played excellent defense on Jayson Tatum. There is close to no individual on the roster that could fill in for him. However, one cannot overlook his struggles in recent years, especially on the offensive end.
The ex-Timberwolves player has been fortunate enough to share the locker room with the likes of Curry and Draymond Green. The two Warriors veterans have been instrumental in the development of Wiggins’ game. Not to forget the role of Coach Steve Kerr, who identified the right role for him.
Why Wiggins’ Days Could be Numbered in the Bay
After an impressive start to the 2024-25 NBA season, the Golden State seems to have fallen off the rail. Their recent loss against the Los Angeles Lakers on Christmas Day has raised serious doubts. Coach Kerr and Co. are 3-11 in their last 14 matchups, causing an alarm.
Owner Joe Lacob and the front office have been on the hunt to pair a star alongside Curry but haven’t found success so far. Hence, if the Warriors wish to trade for a top talent, they will have to make sacrifices. One name that has often made it to these conversations is that of Wiggins.
Not willing to let go of Jonathan Kuminga easily, the management has no choice left but to involve Wiggins in the mix. During the recent summer, there were talks of the former Wolves forward being offered in exchange for players such as Paul George and Lauri Markkanen. Though none of the above discussions materialized, there is no guarantee that Wiggins will continue to be in a Golden State uniform when the season concludes.
