The Golden State Warriors and the Sacramento Kings have had a small rivalry in the last few years. The Warriors upset the Kings in the first round of the 2023 playoffs. Last year, the Kings beat them in the play-in. It is only fitting that Steph Curry is set to make history in a game against the Kings. So, who is ready for a historic game between two Bay Area franchises?
Warriors vs Kings Sets the Stage for a Historic Curry Night
When the Warriors host the Kings on Wednesday evening, Steph Curry will likely become the first player ever to reach 4,000 career three-point field goals made. Right now, Steph has hit 3,998 three-pointers, and needs only two to hit the 4k mark, and three to eclipse it. Only one other player in NBA history has hit more than 3,000 career threes, and his name is James Harden.
Recently, Curry talked about the possibility of hitting a new career milestone.
“I feel like I’m living a constant dream,” he said. “It’s cool that there’s that joke that I set a new record every time I hit a 3. But I try not to think about [the different benchmarks] too much, because last time I did, I psyched myself out for like a five-game stretch.”
Steph Curry: The Greatest Shooter of All Time
If we look at career percentage, Steph is clearly the greatest shooter this game has ever seen. Not only he has hit more threes than any other player, but he is doing it at the best efficiency. Among the top 5 in career three-pointers made, Steph has the best percentage. He has hit threes at a 42.4% rate for his career. Looking at the top five, Harden hits at 36.2% rate, Ray Allen at a 40% rate, Damian Lillard at 37.2%, and Klay Thompson at 41.2%.
It feels like Steph has been in the news for a career milestone in the last few weeks. Every game, it is a new record. Recently, Netflix also released the Court of Gold documentary, in which Steph is one of the main protagonists. His legacy grew even more with the way Netflix cemented his value when Team USA won gold at the 2024 Olympics.
Can Steph Hit 5,000 Career Three Pointers?
First, let’s wait and see how Steph will perform when the Warriors play the Kings on Wednesday evening. But getting to 5,000 career threes is not out of the realm of possibility. Here is a quick look at how long it took him to get each career milestone:
- 0 – 1,000 3s: October 2009 – January 2015 (5 years, 3 months)
- 1,000 – 2,000: January 2015 – December 2017 (2 years, 11 months)
- 2,000 – 3,000: December 2017 – December 2021 (4 years, 0 months)
- 3,000 – 4,000: December 2021 – March 2025 (3 years, 3 months)
This year, he has hit 251 three-point shots. Last year, he made 357 threes and led the NBA. If we look at his last three seasons, he hit 915 three-point shots.
Curry is signed through the 2026-27 season, but fans might hope to have him play for a bit more. LeBron James has set a new standard for players in their later years. With good health, Steph can play three more seasons (one more than his contract), and reach 5k threes at the age of 40. Wouldn’t that be a fitting end to a remarkable career?
