The Warriors are adding former Knicks, Pistons, and Blazers wing Kevin Knox on a 10-day contract.
The Golden State Warriors are signing forward Kevin Knox to a 10-day contract, according to a report by Ohm Youngmisuk and Shams Charania of ESPN on Wednesday. Anthony Slater of The Athletic was first to report that the Dubs were planning on adding Knox during the All-Star break. Knox has appeared in each of the past six NBA seasons, but has spent the entire season thus far with the Warriors G-League affiliate in Santa Cruz.
Knox signed with the Warriors last offseason after an unexpectedly productive performance with the Warriors summer league team, averaging 17.5 points and 8.5 rebounds on .460/.333/.938 shooting in 23.4 minutes per game. In Santa Cruz so far this season, Knox has appeared in 28 games and averaged 21.6 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.3 assists in 32.6 minutes per game on .498/.387/.762 shooting.
Knox was once believed to be one of the best young wing prospects in the world. A five-star recruit to Kentucky, Knox led a Wildcats team filled with future NBA players in scoring and was selected with the ninth overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks. Knox averaged 12.8 points and 4.5 rebounds per game as a teenage rookie, but struggled with efficiency.
Over time, Knox’s role in New York steadily declined. With him buried on the depth chart, Knox was part of a trade package to the Atlanta Hawks during the 2021-22 season. Knox finished out the season with Atlanta and became a free agent for the first time. He signed with the Detroit Pistons before he was once again traded, this time in the four-team deal that brought Gary Payton II back to Golden State, and landed with the Trail Blazers.
At 6’7’’, Knox is a sizable wing who will bring plenty of length to the Warriors bench. While the Dubs would likely benefit from a more quick-footed wing, head coach Steve Kerr will happily take adding another body to his rotation as Golden State looks to charge up the standings.
