After a long rough patch earlier this season, the Golden State Warriors have turned things around. Currently, they are 38-28 and own the No. 6 seed in the West. Though it seemed like the Warriors were in serious danger of missing the postseason, they now look like potential title contenders. Much of their turnaround is thanks to the trade for Jimmy Butler last month. Since acquiring Butler from the Miami Heat, the Warriors are 13-1 in games he is active for. The immediate future is looking bright in Golden State, but they still have some decisions to make in the offseason. This includes one on long-time big man Kevon Looney.
Looney, who has been with the team since 2015, is an impending free agent. He is a three-time champion and knows the ins and outs of the franchise. However, his time in Golden State could be running out. In a recent interview with HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, Looney made it clear that he wants to stay in Golden State. However, he also acknowledged that “free agency is always crazy,” and that “whatever happens, happens.”
“I don’t know. I’m focused on this season right now. You never know what’s going to happen in a short period of time. I’m hoping I can stay healthy, have a great end of the season and playoffs, and then see whatever happens. You always try to be where you’re at, but things change. Free agency is always crazy, so whatever happens, happens.”
This season, Looney has appeared in 60 games, but he has only started six of them. In those games, he is averaging 4.9 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 15.7 minutes.

Kevon Looney Appreciates This Aspect of His NBA Career
While Looney never blossomed into an All-Star talent, he has played an important role on multiple championship teams. Furthermore, he is also unique in the sense that he has spent 10+ years with the same franchise. The Milwaukee native acknowledges that this is not extremely common in the league, but it means a lot to him.
“It means a lot. Not a lot of guys get to play this long with one team. For me, being here 10 years and having a chance to continue to compete and win with our goal being to get to the championship, being a part of a team like that is always fun. I know what it takes and how to keep our culture going and keep everything moving the way we’re supposed to. I’m happy to be here. Whatever happens, happens.”
Currently, Looney is just one of eight players to be on the same team they were on 10 years ago.
The Last Word
With less than a month left in the season, Looney and the Warriors are looking to continue their push. Barring a collapse, they are in a great spot to make the playoffs this year. After losing in the Play-In Tournament last season, they will look to bounce back in a major way and make their first NBA Finals appearance since 2022.
