Free-agent point guard Darren Collison hasn’t played in the NBA since he retired back in 2019. But now, it seems the former first-round pick may be gunning for a comeback in 2021.
According to NBA insider Chris Haynes, Collison has scheduled a workout with the Golden State Warriors later this week.

As of right now, the Warriors’ primary PG backup behind superstar Steph Curry is Jordan Poole, who’s typically more comfortable playing the shooting guard position. With 10 years of NBA point guard experience under his belt, Collison could be a decent veteran option as a facilitator for the team’s second unit.
In each of his 10 NBA seasons, Collison averaged 10+ points per game. Through his most recent season with the Indianapolis Pacers in 2018-19, he averaged 11.2 points and a career-high 6.0 assists per game.
His retirement from the NBA was abrupt, siting religious reasons for his departure from the league.
“I could never imagine finding anything that brings me more joy than I get from playing the game,” Collison wrote in an article for The Undefeated. “While I still love basketball, I know there is something more important, which is my family and my faith. I am one of the Jehovah’s Witnesses and my faith means everything to me. I receive so much joy from volunteering to help others and participate in a worldwide ministry. The joy I feel is unmatched. With that being said, I have decided to retire from the NBA.”
Collison gained interest during last year’s offseason as well, getting calls from both the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers before ultimately deciding to remain in retirement.
That interest has been now been rekindled, and the Warriors aren’t the first team to consider Collison as a backup PG option this offseason. Earlier this month, the 34-year-old vet worked out with the Lakers alongside Mike James and Isaiah Thomas.
