Despite the loss at Dallas, the youngsters seemed very confident with the imminent addition of Stephen Curry — full coverage on practice yesterday in LA coming up in another post. Jonathan Kuminga was borderline arrogant, I thought, and that’s a good thing.
He started his postgame interview like this: “Yeah, talk to me. But don’t make it too long, alright?”
👀 Don’t make it too long? A third-year player is telling the room to hurry it up? Mmmkay. Lol. I could be wrong, maybe there was some kind of legitimate urgency, like he needed to pickup his dry cleaning, who knows?
Later on, you can even see him kind of urge Trayce Jackson-Davis to take the podium, scroll down a little for the video.
But I like it. It’s an indication (perhaps) that he has arrived. I’m not sure if I still like the complaining to the refs, as shown up-close in the behind-the-scenes video…
…but if that’s also a sign of him thinking he’s good enough to get calls, I get it.
Of course, there’s plenty of that going on behind closed doors, as Kuminga told Kerith Burke and Monte Poole that Draymond Green hypes him up constantly, almost to the point of annoyance. This was on their latest 30-minute talk with JK on the Dubs Talk podcast, which maybe I’ll transcribe soon in a separate post (?). So maybe Green should tone it down a little so that Kuminga can direct his energy on the court away from the refs and towards the next play? Oh well, whatever. Maybe that’s my old coaching habits resurfacing.
After his aforementioned opening line demanding, I mean, requesting that the Q&A stay on the shorter side, he took a quick glance at the boxscore and slammed his fist on the table in frustration. Good to see that he cares. You can see it all here at the 5:45 mark:
Additionally, Steve Kerr alluded to JK (and others) getting smothered too many times by Daniel Gafford, who had seven blocks: “They had 13 blocked shots. A lot of those were just us kind of wildly driving into Gafford without getting a body into him first to take him out of his shot-blocking position.”
But when reporters asked about those in a respectfully general fashion, Kuminga replied, “It’s just a lot of things did not go our way. Just them having that type of presence did not really affect us. It’s just things did not go our way.”
Wow, Gafford’s presence did not really affect y’all? Ok. All good. Again, I love the arrogance, tbh.
Almost seems like he felt they would’ve won the game had the refs called some fouls on his ill-fated attacks of the rim — this is just gross speculation by me, of course. All of this is. But hey, sometimes I gotta get a little bloggy on here, especially when a “blah” road game with zero Steph Curry Effect occurs and there’s not much else happening, other than Slovenians serenading Luka Doncic on the bowels of American Airlines Center or a random Warriors fan getting an autograph from Gary Payton II on his arm (see BTS video, above).
The evolution of Kuminga continues.
Dean “of Positivity” Chambers as well as John Dickinson of KNBR discussed with me on the game livestream how Kuminga could start adjusting to the adjustments. I have advocated that he just forcefully do a jump stop fade a la Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan or Kawhi Leonard from 12 feet instead of 15 feet. A single extra dribble can do some amazing things.
And I’m not worried about the humility needed to balance all that arrogance and frustration, as Kuminga explained his journey in more detail on that Dubs Talk podcast, plus Daniel Brown of The Athletic interviewed assistant coach Anthony Vereen. So we know “AV” is there to keep Kuminga in check, behind closed doors: https://theathletic.com/5336542/2024/03/15/jonathan-kuminga-warriors-anthony-vereen-coach/
Perhaps for the first time ever (I could be wrong), all the Warriors players that did the Dallas postgame interviews did not include any vets: Brandin Podziemski, Kuminga, and Jackson-Davis. The Warriors didn’t play bad, but they didn’t quite have enough to beat a solid team in the West.
“We played good, even though we were down our two best players. We fought and competed, which is kind of what Coach is looking for,” said Podziemski. “But we gotta do a better job of communication and then just simply sprinting back; if you get five guys on the floor before they get their five, we have a pretty good chance every time to at least make them run something in the half court.”
Jackson-Davis: “Us at full strength versus them at full strength, that’s a battle, and I like our chances.”
And so I’m gonna have to disagree with anybody saying the Warriors look really average and 10th-placey right now. That’s right now. Without Steph. A lot can happen in the final 17 games. I wrote that the youngsters failed to bring the energy against Chicago at home — although the real reason was that limiting Andrew Wiggins’ minutes on successive nights didn’t work — and so I think the youngsters have learned their lesson on that one, going forward.
As Yogi Berra once said, “It is difficult to make predictions, especially about the future.” That is to say, them looking average on March 13th at Dallas does not necessarily mean they’ll look average after the final game on April 14th at Chase Center (vs Utah).
I’ve mentioned this before, but the easiest way to look at the situation is to somehow finish 12 games over .500, because the sixth spot has been consistently 10 or 11 games over .500 since the All-Star Break (we check the standings after every livestream, so this is anecdotal).
To get to 47-35, assuming with Curry that the Warriors defeat all teams below them in the standings — I know, seems like a big assumption — they need to win five games out of the these nine solid teams: Lakers, Knicks, Pacers, Timberwolves, Heat, Mavericks, Mavericks, Lakers, Pelicans.
The other factor is Draymond. He’s been subpar lately, especially with the turnovers. Turns out, he’s dealing with a pretty concerning back injury that “locks back up”. This has happened over the last 4-5 games prior to Dallas, as he explained on his latest podcast.
Of course, Wiggins has to play like 2022 Finals Wiggins, but everything is interconnected. It’s harder for him to do that if Steph or Draymond aren’t there. The BTS video from Dallas above even shows a breakdown in defensive communication with Klay Thompson.
Pregame talk by Kerr on Chris Paul and Wiggs is also in the transcription below…
PREGAME GSW-DAL (NO VIDEO)
Did you get a report on Steph today? I know he practiced.
STEVE KERR PREGAME GSW-DAL: “Only that he practiced and that everything went well, and he’ll meet us in LA Friday and practice there. And then we’ll see, see if he’s ready for Saturday.”
Coach, Chris Paul, everything he brings to the table, obviously not the same player he once was, but he still brings so much. What does he bring to the table for this team against a team like the Mavericks?
“Chris is an organizer, he’s a clutch player. He thrives in pressure situations. You get into a close game down the stretch, you’re going to get a good shot every time with Chris. He’s master of the pick and roll. Been really great for us to pair him with Trayce because of the lob threat. The other night, Chris did a great job of getting Trayce the ball at the rim. And that was a big component to our offense. So, yeah, it’s nice to have Chris on our side instead of having to go against him.”
A lot of point guards nowadays are shooting three-pointers from way out, all that kind of stuff. Do you think Chris Paul is maybe one of the last traditional point guards we’re going to see?
“Yeah, there just aren’t many guys like him anymore. Steph has really influenced a lot of the young point guards in the league now, and so shooting the three is a much bigger deal for the modern point guard compared to guys like Chris. So, he is a little bit of a dying breed. But you hope that you’re still gonna be able to produce some pass-first point guards because they just add so much to the game. Chris has been at the top of his craft for a long time.”
Philosophical question for you. Do you think being a defender in this league is harder than it was when, say, you played and why or why not?
“For sure. And it’s just because there’s so much more space to cover. I know you could be a little more physical back in the day, but you generally didn’t have to cover the whole court. You just had to cover the paint and then just for a handful of players, you had to get out to the three-point line, but it was easier to provide support for each other as teammates. Now, everybody spreads you out. And so people are more exposed today than ever before.”
Andrew the other night as he continues to get comfortable, he’s shot the ball efficiently. Just what did you see?
“I thought he moved well. I liked his aggressiveness. I want him to remain aggressive and continue to look for his shot, but also get to the rim, get fouled. I loved his offensive rebound put-back. You know that when he was at his best in the playoffs two years ago, against Dallas, against Boston, he got a ton of offensive boards, and we want him to continue to look for those.”
POSTGAME GSW-DAL
0:00 In the second quarter, what was the toughest part offensively?
STEVE KERR POSTGAME GSW-DAL: “We had a lot of turnovers in the first half, felt like some real killers, too, that turned into points the other way. They scored 21 points off of our turnovers tonight. A lot of them felt like they were in the second quarter. So I thought we got off to a good start. First half, we had good ball movement, good pace, and then things slowed down quite a bit for us in the second.”
0:26 What do you feel like you guys missed Draymond the most tonight?
“What Draymond does, he puts his impact on the game one way or the other. But it doesn’t matter; people get hurt and you gotta respond.”
0:46 You had a really good record for like a six week stretch; now 1-3 in the last four. Do you feel you’ve lost momentum?
“A little bit for sure. The record shows that, but I still like who our team is. We’re hoping to get Steph back for Saturday. I like the team a lot better now than I did a couple months ago, where we were really sorting through a lot of things. So we have an identity. We know who we are. We’ll bounce back here and I’m excited about the last part of the season.”
1:24 Did the standings become a little daunting?
“No, you can’t worry about it. We look at them every day, obviously, but there’s nothing we can do about that. But the season, it really is a marathon. And at any point in the season, you rattle off 10 wins in a row, then that matters, whether it’s in the beginning or the end, it doesn’t matter. And I still have no doubt that this team can get on a great run and make a good push.”
1:54 Seems like you guys kept Luka in check for the most part. How do you feel you guys executed the game plan?
“I thought our half court defense was pretty good. They missed some shots that they could have made clearly. But overall, I thought our defense was not the problem. It was much more our offense. They had 13 blocked shots. A lot of those were just us kind of wildly driving into Gafford without getting a body into him first to take him out of his shot-blocking position and then just a lot of stagnant possessions, not enough flow, not enough movement.”
2:34 BRANDIN PODZIEMSKI (looking at boxscore): “Sheesh.”
What are you ‘sheeshing’ at?
“Surprised they shot that poorly from three. Thought they shot better.”
2:50 You guys had like 15 second quarter points. Is that where it kind of got away?
“I wouldn’t even say the second quarter. They were up six at halftime. Maybe it was it the beginning of third or beginning of fourth, they went on – might have been the fourth. Yeah, we were down six, going into the fourth, if I’m correct. Yeah. Yeah. And then they just kind of outscored us. At one point, they were up 16. Just kind of got away from back in transition. A lot transition, whether it was some threes or throwing to Gafford at the rim and that kind of propelled their offense.”
3:32 Are you starting to think about what these losses do, like the implications standings-wise? How daunting is it starting to feel?
“Yeah, it feels daunting. And the fact that you don’t want to be the 10th seed. Obviously, the 11th seed is four or five games behind us. So for us to get that low, I don’t think it’s going to happen. But you don’t want to be a 10th seed and have to play two road games before you get into an actual series and you gotta win both. So, these guys are in the play-in right now. Same with the Lakers and Sacramento, so any chance we get to play one of those teams, it’s crucial that we win.”
4:14 What kind of perspective do you feel you guys have had in the last few games playing without Steph?
“There’s some goods and some bads. The win at San Antonio kind of showed us – they’re not the best of teams – it just kind of showed us that when we compete and play hard for a full game and make teams beat us in the half court, we can be really good regardless of whose five is out on the floor, and tonight we did that pretty much for the first half. They were 1-for-14 at the half from three. And then we kind of just lit it up in transition and that’s where they got most of the buckets. And then, once you see a couple go in, then your three starts to go in, too. So, we played good, even though we were down our two best players. We fought and competed, which is kind of what Coach is looking for. But yeah, that’s probably the biggest reason.”
5:08 What needs to change for you guys to fix that?
“Yeah, it’s just communication of who has the ball. And then building from the rim out. A lot of times, Kyrie would take it down and just throw it in there to (Dereck) Lively because there was a mismatch or whatnot. But we gotta do a better job of communication and then just simply sprinting back; if you get five guys on the floor before they get their five, we have a pretty good chance every time to at least make them run something in the half court.”
5:48 JONATHAN KUMINGA: “…Yeah, talk to me. But don’t make it too long, alright?” (Slams fist on table after reading something on the boxscore.)
JK, 27 points tonight. What was working for you?
“I mean, just staying aggressive, but that don’t really matter, you know? At the end of the day, we still losing the game. But just being aggressive and all my teammates just trusting me.”
6:25 What kind of challenge did their length of the paint present? What kind of challenge did their size around the basket present for you guys?
“It’s just a lot of things did not go our way. Just them having that type of presence did not really affect us. It’s just things did not go our way.”
6:48 Steve said that sometimes the offense was a bit stagnant tonight. Why do you think that might have been?
“Different combination. We haven’t really got a chance to not have everybody else. Some days we got Draymond, some days we got Steph. We all haven’t really, like, been short-handed like that. So that’s just something that we will go over and just review a lot of films and just practice and hopefully get the next game.”
7:24 Jonathan, you guys were down six points after three and the Mavericks came out with a 16-4 run to start the fourth quarter and that was without Luka. What happened to the team during that stretch?
“They had their run. We just did not cut the water off, and I feel like that’s when we lost the game because they just came out hot and they got a couple fouls that we didn’t get. I did a couple turnover. Everybody can make some turnover and things do not go our way.”
8:09 You didn’t have any questions for JK (because Trayce Jackson-Davis was waiting for him to finish his interview)?
TRAYCE JACKSON-DAVIS: “Nah, he played a great game. You just gotta stay aggressive. When he’s aggressive, sky’s the limit.”
8:22 Same question for JK, their blocks around the room. What ways did you feel that?
“Yeah. It’s hard, especially when Draymond’s out. They got two really good defenders in Gafford and Lively and they’re rotating bigs. So they’re staying fresh. So they’re tough to go against that. During the game, they shrunk the paint a lot. And they kind of let us not necessarily shoot wide-open shots, but they were playing the drive, lob, and all of that stuff, trying to cut that out and make us shoot jump shots. And so they had a great game plan, and we’re just going to have to watch the film.”
9:05 What kind of perspective do you guys feel like you gain collectively that you can apply moving forward, playing these last few games without Steph?
“We got to step up as well. So, finding out what guys do well, finding out what guys don’t do well and then just getting some team chemistry together. It’s huge.”
9:35 How much do you focus on the standings at all with everything bunched up at the bottom of the plate at this point?
“Yeah, obviously it’s always on our mind. We gotta take them one game at a time and that’s in LA on Saturday.”
9:49 The Mavs are a team you’re going to see two more times this season. You might see them in the play-in. At full strength, how do you think you match up with them?
“We match up well. It was a game through three quarters. They went on a run. That’s basketball. But at the end of the day, us at full strength versus them at full strength, that’s a battle, and I like our chances.”
