Led by Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson (and coached by Steve Kerr), the Golden State Warriors‘ recent dynasty is one of the history books. Together, they won four NBA championships, made six NBA Finals appearances, and won numerous awards. Additionally, their 73-win season in 2015-16 is the winningest regular season in league history.
While they are not in their glory days anymore, the Warriors are still a solid team. Furthermore, they are still competing for a championship. While Thompson has since joined the Dallas Mavericks, Curry, Green, and Kerr remain with the Warriors. Recently, Kerr made a comment regarding Green that many fans will surely disagree with.
In a recent interview with Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area, Kerr called Green the “best defender I’ve ever seen.”
“He’s the best defender I’ve ever seen,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “I mean, you see the pick-and-roll with Dame. If he’s in it, he kind of does this fake blitz thing with his speed, with his anticipation. He forces Dame back out towards halfcourt and he’s able to get back. The speed and recovery with Draymond is just stunning. “And then the brain that goes with it. If he’s on the weak side, he’s constantly coming over to help. He’s one of the great defenders of all time, and he’s still doing it at a high level.”

Draymond Green Says He Can Win DPOY This Year
Despite being one of the greatest defenders in NBA history, Green has won the Defensive Player of the Year award just one time. However, the Michigan State alum recently said he thinks he can win the award for a second time this year.
“Obviously, if we keep winning and close this year out strong, most definitely,” Green said when asked if he thinks he has a case to be named the league’s best defender. “I look around the league and don’t see many players impacting the game on the defensive end the way I do. I don’t see many players completely throwing off an entire team’s offense the way I do. One thousand percent.
“Especially with Wemby [the San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama] going down, seemed like he had it won. And now it is right there. So 1 million percent I have a case, and I will continue to build that case for these next 13 games. Tonight was a prime example of that.”
Currently, Green (+600) has the second-highest odds to win the award, according to Bovada. Only Cleveland Cavaliers big man Evan Mobley (-250) has better odds.
The Last Word
Green is certainly one of the best defenders in league history. He is versatile and ferocious. Additionally, he remains the anchor on one of the best defenses in the NBA. However, this is an interesting take regardless. This is especially true since Kerr played alongside some of the game’s greatest defenders, such as Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Tim Duncan. Regardless, Green is fantastic as well and deserves his flowers.
