With 7.3 seconds remaining and Golden State leading by one, play was stopped when Ja Morant reached in on Stephen Curry and made contact with the ball, which went out of bounds. The NBA said the ball should have been called off Curry’s hand, awarding possession to Memphis instead of Golden State.

More on this storyline
“Look, I’m not gonna say I’m not hungry, but I’m doing this for Steph,” Butler told The Athletic. “I’m doing this for Dray. I’m doing this for these guys. As much as I want to win a championship, I want Dray to win another one. I want Steph to win another one. I know I ain’t got mine yet, but they deserve it. They’ve been putting this city and this organization on their back for a very long time, and I’m glad that I can be here to try and do something special.” -via New York Times / April 16, 2025

In 2023-24, injuries and the resulting lack of stability crushed the Grizzlies, producing a 27-55 year after back-to-back 50-win seasons. A shoulder injury and 25-game suspension all but erased Ja Morant’s year. Desmond Bane missed half the games. Only Jackson and third-year forward Santi Aldama played in more than 60 games. Jackson, at least, made the most of it. “It was everything. It gave me a chance to be defended by teams in a specific way,” Jackson told The Athletic. “(Opposing teams) were throwing all types of crazy coverages and schemes out there. There were a lot of things I had to learn. It presented me with a new challenge. … Usually, my job was to just get it and score. But I had to learn to set up my teammates; make sure they were involved. That was a big step for me.” -via New York Times / April 16, 2025

Vernon Maxwell on Ja Morant: Ja got to chill with all that sh*t. Yyou already got a reputation… Ja, come on, this is your this Uncle Max talking to you, goddamn baby, we got to goddamn like try change the narrative now a little bit. What I mean you were going to be the face of the NBA one time now you’re the villain, okay? That’s who I was… You can embrace the villain part and be a villain but still man, keep that goddamn money in your goddamn pocket boy. (…) Save that money, be more professional about what you’re doing, you get more deals than what you’re getting. -via YouTube / April 15, 2025
