The Golden State Warriors have been mentioned as a possible trade suitor for Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant. That’s not a huge surprise considering the two sides know each other well.
ESPN insider Brian Windhorst reported on “Get Up” that Phoenix started entertaining trade calls for Durant after realizing it won’t be able to pair him with Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler. As for the Warriors, they’ve made it abundantly clear they want to get Steph Curry a co-star.
“Durant has one year on his contract, so they [the Suns] have now begun entertaining, ‘Should we trade Kevin Durant?’ And they have begun those discussions across the league,” Windhorst said. “Now, I’d like to shift you to the Bay: 25-24, veteran team, underachieving, difficult time trading for a star. They’ve been looking for a year for a star, looking for LeBron [James], for Paul George, for [Lauri] Markkanen, all these things. Very aggressive owner who can’t stand this. I am describing to you how this began. So now, we have the Warriors and Suns discussing the possibility of bringing Kevin Durant back, okay? I am not gonna sit here and even begin to project or guess as to how this may go down.”
Unfortunately for the Warriors, it doesn’t sound like Durant will be joining their roster before the trade deadline.
During an appearance on “NBA Today,” ESPN insider Shams Charania reported that Durant isn’t interested in a reunion with Golden State.
“Sources tell me Durant has no desire in a reunion with the Warriors,” Charania said. “He does not want to go back to the Warriors, where he won two championships and two Finals MVPs.”
Charania didn’t reveal why Durant is against a trade to Golden State.
Durant spent three seasons with the Warriors. While he accomplished his ultimate goal of becoming an NBA champion, it was pretty clear he was never going to be the face of the franchise.
With one year remaining on Durant’s contract, it’ll be fascinating to see how this situation in Phoenix plays out.
As of right now, Durant remains on the Suns. That could change in the next 24 hours.
