Steve Kerr talked about the first half of the Sacramento game as the “blueprint” (transcript way below) for the Warriors’ path — a path that based on what I called on the livestream a “clinic”, is DEFINITELY championship material, just look at the game notes for Q1 and Q2 at the bottom of this post. Then Klay Thompson went on the podium and said he “still has a wholehearted belief” in the team.
So why don’t (online, two-dimensional) fans feel the same? Because, as Jason Kidd pointed out in his postgame yesterday after the Mavs defeated the Rockets, and directly at ESPN’s Tim McMahon, all you see is negativity on your timeline.
And you probably didn’t see anything on your timeline about Moses Moody last week taking the podium and saying, “A fool looks for happiness in the distance while a wise man sees it under his feet.”
LetsGoWarriors is still the only media outlet in the NBA that focuses on the positive. Why? Because it embodies what the Warriors embody inside the walls of Oracle Performance Center. I’m literally bringing you closer to the team. I’ve always made you felt like the 19th man on the team (15 main guys up through 2020 then add 2 two-ways til 2021 and now 3 two-ways). Do you think any of the Warriors players are thinking Kerr is a horrible coach? Not even Moody thinks that and he would be the ONE guy who should. There’s respect for everyone and nobody throws anybody else under the bus — it’s as appealing to hear someone throw Steve under the bus as it would be Stephen Curry! They preach positivity. LGW embodies Warriors culture.
If you’re sick of what you see on your timeline, just as I was on Wednesday which is the reason for this late post, come join us on the livechat tonight!
As for Tuesday night, the consensus of my talks with my people is that Steph having the ball in his hands with 44 seconds left, up four points, and throwing the ball to other team is a far more egregious mistake than Kerr not playing Moody more. He was just on the podium for Clippers pregame and said he would’ve had Klay out “for a few minutes.” I do not equate that to having Moody there with 44 seconds to go.
I’d be shocked if Klay shouldn’t have been there at that moment in time — and I actually reveal in the breakdown video that he did not come meet the ball. If anything, I would’ve had Moody in for Kevon Looney. Anyways, the media allowing the timeline to fester with everything BUT Steph’s brain fart (utterly embarrassing brain fart of an AAU-level turnover, mind you) is unfortunate and irresponsible. But hey, that’s the click-scroll-world we live in.
Alas, the blueprint cannot be executed without all its pieces, so check out the notes leading up to tonight’s Clips game, followed by GSW-SAC postgame transcripts:
• Golden State Warriors G/F Gary Payton II has suffered a torn right calf and will be sidelined indefinitely, sources tell TheAthletic and Stadium. (Shams Charania)
• On GP2’s injury: “Key is that a strain = some degree of tearing. A lot depends on which calf muscles, location, and grading of the tear (1-3). If you look at NFL players with this “general” type of injury they usually land ~ 4-6 weeks but can be shifted based on the MRI specifics.” (Dr. Nirav Pandya)
• Golden State’s Chris Paul (lower leg nerve contusion) is expected to be day-to-day in his return to play, sources tell ESPN. The Warriors are listing him out vs. the Clippers on Thursday. (Adrian Wojnarowski)
• GP2: “All good, we gonna shake back!! 🖤”
• Brandin Podziemski: “We goin hold it down for ya twin🤞🏽🖤”
• Andrew Wiggins listed as OUT on injury report, approximately 1pm PST on Thu 11/30 (via Anthony Slater).
• Some clarity: Payton’s calf strain (which is a tear) will keep him out longer than the one week official re-evaluation. Warriors expect to have a better grasp on severity/recovery timeline over next week. Paul’s nerve issue is improving. Expectation remains it’ll be short term. (Anthony Slater)
• On GP2 and CP3’s announcements by Warriors: Good news that GP2 will be re-evaluated in a week. Key is that a strain = some degree of tearing (graded 1-3). For CP3, nerve contusion = bruising of nerve that can typically can pain, numbness, or weakness. Resolution of symptoms usually = return to play. Key is that a strain = some degree of tearing (two different ways of saying the same thing). It can be microscopic (grade 1), partial (grade 2), or complete (grade 3). Re-evaluation in a week is a very positive sign. (Dr. Nirav Pandya)
• Warriors guard Chris Paul, who exited Tuesday’s game at Sacramento with 19 seconds remaining in the first quarter due to a lower left leg nerve contusion, underwent an MRI yesterday. The MRI confirmed the contusion and that there was no structural damage. He will be re-evaluated again on Monday. (Warriors PR)
• Warriors guard Gary Payton II, who exited Tuesday’s game at Sacramento with 49 seconds remaining in the third quarter due to a right calf injury, underwent an MRI yesterday. The MRI confirmed a strained right calf for Payton. He will be re-evaluated again in one (1) week. (Warriors PR).
• Andrew Wiggins slammed a finger in the car door this morning. Kerr said watching Wiggins at shootaround, he figured the forward would miss this game. Not expected to be long term, according to Kerr pregame: “Just a tough blow for him.” (Janie McCauley, Kendra Andrews)
• Kerr says the first half in Sacramento “is the team we envisioned and the team I know we are going to be when we have everyone healthy” before explaining all the issues from the second half that have to be cleaned up. (Dalton Johnson)
• Kerr regrets subbing Moses Moody out vs SAC the other night for Wiggins. Says it should’ve been Klay coming out. Moody will start for Wiggins tonight vs LAC. (Monte Poole)
0:00 Stephen Curry postgame Sacramento on when the wheels fell off: “Our first half was pretty solid, probably the best basketball we’ve played on both sides of the floor. Built up that big lead, had a rough last few possessions in the first half. And I missed the two-for-one, I lost it on a turnover. So that gave them a little bit of a momentum and third quarter, we responded pretty well. Had a couple untimely turnovers to start the momentum run. And then they got sort of fouled 42 times … easy points … starting to blitz me pretty much everywhere, we got some pretty good looks and gave us some room but didn’t go out way and it’s just a make-or-miss league down the stretch where those two turnovers, I had one, Draymond had one. It’s tough. Tough way to go out and all those things put together like we played pretty well. It’s just we ran out of gas.”
1:25 on what happened on his turnover: “They got the ball in and obviously eight seconds in my head. We didn’t have a timeout because we challenged the offensive foul they called on me. So the turnaround, obviously Vezenkov came back to try to trap and we had kind of a flow down the court. I knew I couldn’t call a timeout. So just trying to make a read. It was the wrong one. Obviously De’Aaron hits a three and then we had a better kind of reaction to them trapping up-court to get it across and had a lot of miscommunications. So you obviously want those two plays back because you’re up, what, three at the time? Could’ve changed the narrative of the game.”
2:24 on how upset the locker room is with this loss: “Obviously after this one, it’s gonna be tough to swallow. Just because you should have won the game. Played well enough to win for 40 minutes, knowing the stretch that we’ve been on. We were really motivated. The In-Season Tournament was a motivator, for sure. We knew we had to win by 12 to get out. That was in our head trying to get to the finish. And then you end up losing it on top of it. So it’s a tough pill to swallow for sure. Frustrated and I think we all gotta look ourselves in the mirror and figure out what we individually can do better in those deciding moments of the game, better decisions, better discipline to not foul, all the little things that impacts winning. That’s the only way we’re gonna get out of this little funk where you’re playing hard and you have nothing to show for it.
3:38 on what his take was on the offensive foul where they said he kicked his leg out: “I only saw the replay once, I haven’t checked it again, but to my — the way I felt, obviously the shooter is going to turn, it was a tough shot and you got two guys leaving their feet to jump to match you, so there’s gonna be a natural movement to turn. He said my leg went too high. And there’s obviously a judgment on their part. But anybody who’s shot that shot, especially you’re turning, trying to get your shoulder square and you land, you also gotta protect yourself as well. I didn’t think it was exaggerated at all. So the momentum, taking them into me, like I felt like they would protect the shoot a little bit better on that call. Obviously they went to look at and it didn’t go my way.”
4:41 on any optimism that they can compete at rtg the level they want to: “Well, we did in the first half tonight. Just keep doing it and finish the job. I think you know there’s been a lot of talk about how individuals on our team have played. Klay played amazing and Wiggs was unreal tonight. It was great having Draymond back, hit some big shots for us in that fourth quarter. So we want to give ourselves a chance to — I know CP got hurt, GP got hurt. So it’s kind of like a revolving door of the rotations on the team that you want to kind of see for a stretch, to see where we are because every NBA team goes through it in some way, shape or form or injuries and availability become a problem. But 18 games or whatever it is, we haven’t had a stretch. We’ve had the full combination because we’re a team that, obviously, every piece matters. With the way that we’re built, it’s frustrating but we have to keep m bringing it. There’s not loss of confidence at all just had to bring our effort every night and hopefully we’ll have something to show for it.”
6:08 on pulling Draymond away from the referee during that technical foul sequence: “I ain’t gonna lie. If that was anybody else? That’s the one — he’s passionate; in those conversations and he has shown in the past that when he gets fiery, you kind of know where the limit is. The carrying sign and all that, I was doing the same thing right behind him and they gave him the tech just because that’s kind of what you expect them to do, with that kind of situation. And I told him just refocus at that point and let’s just hoop. But that was a dumb tech for sure. We all do that, like, ‘Did you see the carry? Did you see the carry?’ type thing. So for him, be fiery, be competitive, be who you are. And we all need to be mindful of not getting distracted and just try to play basketball.”
7:21 on how much urgency there: “With. whatever, 64 games we have left … you do get to a certain point. First 20 games, take stock of where you are. That second 20, you really kind of show what you’re about because that’s where the standings start to kind of materialize and you don’t want to be in a position where you’re chasing. Because we’ve been in that position before and it’s l tough to grind all the way through l the last half of the season worried about where you are in the standings, every game and then try to transition into a playoff series with the right kind of energy and being able to sustain that. And you obviously want to get there, so for us there’s urgency for sure. It’s not panic. It’s like I said before these next, this next window of games, especially I think in December we have another big homestand. They all matter but that’s gonna really matter for us to kind of get healthy as we say, show who we are and who we can be.”
8:57 on how the same guys who went championships turn the ball over and not make the plays down the stretch after doing it so many times: “That’s how basketball is, especially in this league with so much talent on every given night. It’s already difficult to win games and then when things start spiraling, especially on the road, it becomes possession here, possession there, that changes the whole kind of mentality and momentum of the game. So that’s why first question, I identified like the two turnovers I had at the end of the first half or two bad possessions we had at the end of the first half and then there’s those two, last three possessions where we just give them a little bit of life. The whole narrative of the game changes if you get those two possessions back because you probably win by three. You don’t make it to the in-season tournament but you still win a road game against a good team. And those are the ones that make you lose a little bit of sleep because we expect better of ourselves and stuff. So I’m not shying away from the accountability on that, just try to keep getting better.”
10:35 on if he’d like to see Moses Moody out there when he’s hot like that: “They’re all tough decisions because we have a lot of options, a lot of different lineup combinations. And it’s tough for a guy like him to come in with that type of confidence, knock down big shots, have that presence. And then we have a closing lineup that has won plenty of games. So it’s credit to him for staying ready, being ready and doing what he’s asked to do, taking advantage of his minutes keeping us in the game. That’s gonna help for when the rotation materializes of what’s our best kind of go-to rotations that’ll help us win more consistently. So he’s doing his job, he’s doing all he can and I think that’s gonna pay off for him in the long run.”
0:00 Steve Kerr postgame Sacramento on what aspect of the second half was most detrimental: “The fouling and the turnovers, both. 42 free throws. It’s really hard to beat a good team on the road while giving up 42 free throws, so just the fouling. And there were some where there’s not much we can do where we get out of position and they come in, create the contact, but we’re not set or whatever. But there were plenty where you foul a three-point shooter or bite on a pump fake, reach when we don’t have to. It’s really hard to win, giving up that many free throws. And then of course, 20 turnovers, gave up 26 points off those turnovers. So that’s the game right there. It’s those two things.”
0:47 on Moses Moody being really hot in the fourth and subbing him out: “Moses was awesome tonight. We needed to get Wiggs on the floor for defense against Fox. And we decided to go with Klay and our vets. We thought about keeping him out there but we made the move that we made. By the way, Moses was fantastic, out of the rotation tonight to start the game. I talked to him before the game and explained what we were doing. The guy, he reminds me of Loon. Moses is the ultimate pro, just continues to work every single day and understands, embraces coaching, embraces the work. Moses, he’s a special guy. He’s like a wing version of Loon. And that matters. That’s why he’s going to be in the league for a long time.”
1:53 on how disappointing it was that they wanted to get the starters going, but they were the ones who weren’t getting it done: “Yeah, it’s disappointing. Sacramento played really hard. Second half they came out and really tried to be physical and we had to play without Chris (Paul), obviously with the injury. We had to play our guys a little bit more than we wanted to, minutes-wise. And so we withstood a lot of their rallies and made some big shots. did some good things. But, again, the fouling and the turnovers, that’s what it comes down to.”
2:41 on the wheels falling off after being up eight when Draymond got the technical: “Well, we fouled quite a bit, so they were shooting free throws a lot. And we had some decent looks we didn’t knock down but our guys hung tough. They came back and took the lead and then we went back up, I think six, and just didn’t get it done down the stretch… You’ve got to take care of the ball and we didn’t do that. And then the last play, perfect defense, Wiggs was fantastic. Monk had that tough toss to the rim and give Sacramento credit. They fought like crazy and earned the win.”
3:47 on losing the challenge with the Curry offensive foul, which left them with no timeouts: “It’s a huge play. If we get the challenge, if they overturn the offensive foul, Steph’s going to the line for three free throws and the game’s probably over. So we felt like it was worth it. I think they called him for a kick. But if you’re going to your left and you shoot, your right leg is going to drift out. We thought Monk went right into him, but they called the offensive foul.”
4:28 on Chris Paul and Gary Payton II’s injuries: “Not sure. Not sure.”
4:38 on how surprised he was by how well they played in the first half: “First half was great. That’s who our team is, a team getting stops, knocking down shots. Wiggs was great. Klay got off to a great start as well. And with that two-big lineup, with Draymond and Loon, that’s what we have to have. We have them out there for defense and then we have to have our guards and Wiggs knock down shots. So that’s our team and then we come off the bench with Gary and Dario and Chris. The blueprint is there. And so I’m really excited about this and I know it’s a frustrating loss and I’m sure all our fans are frustrated. We’re frustrated, but we’re gonna have a good team. We’re gonna have a good season, but we’ve got to get better.”
5:33 on what part of CP3’s body is injured and how head-scratching the last two turnovers by Stephen Curry and Draymond Green were: “Yeah, I mean, those are tough plays. And those are obviously, two incredible players. So that happens. My experience in this league, you have one gut punch loss a year where you go to the locker and you cannot believe that you lost the game. Last year we had one of those in Utah. And this one felt like that or just we played well enough. But I don’t look at those two plays as the difference. I look at all the fouling, 42 free throws again. It’s just too difficult to win a game in that regard.”
6:33 on how significant long-term it is, the way Wiggins and Klay played, if they got back on track and if it was just making shots: “Yeah, but I mean, we’ve seen this coming with Wiggs. He had a game like this last week against OKC, I think it was. And he’s really in much better rhythm now. And defense is improved and he’s just starting to look like himself and and the game made sense, especially early on, with our defense, turning our defense into offense and spacing the floor. And Klay’s shots were much easier there in the in the first half and that’s how our team should look.”
7:20 on if they seem to be in a freefall: “We’re not in a freefall. It’s the early part of the season and we’re losing a bunch of close games and we can see it on tape, every game: fouling, turnovers. I can only say it so many times. Those two things have to improve. When they do, we’re going to be really good.”
7:47 on if the issue of fouling and turnovers and late-game closing feels different to him than last year, that it’s kind of continuing: “Of course, there’s a concern. We made those two things the entire focal point and at the start of camp and we haven’t made those improvements. So we have to do it.”
8:26 Klay Thompson postgame Sacramento on the main problem down the stretch: “I think we fouled too much. That looks like the one thing that we could have done much better is limit our failing. Tough loss, though. That one sucked.”
8:47 on if needing a 12-point win got in their heads: “No, we still want to win the game. And we were right there to be victorious. We were right there to win by 12 as well. So it’s just a hard one to swallow and these happen throughout the season. And it just sucks. I mean, we all wanted to play in that in-season tournament.”
9:16 on the turnovers being the main talking point of Steve Kerr’s and what the team can do to turn that around: “That’s a good question. I would say stick with it, not get discouraged by a bad night tonight and realize we’re going home with an opportunity to right the ship. I still have a wholehearted belief in this team that we can do some special things and I know we will.”
9:51 on if the couple turnovers towards the end was not paying attention to details: “You can say that or just being careless with the ball. Gosh, I don’t know. It’s just a tough — yeah, carelessness with the ball was our biggest defect tonight.”
10:31 Andrew Wiggins postgame Sacramento on not being able to hold the 24-point lead and smaller one towards the end: “Solid first half and that second half, especially that third quarter. Just fouling. They’re getting to the foul line, scoring points and stopping time. Turnovers. Those are the two main things.”
11:03 on if they see the blueprint Kerr mentioned: “Um, I mean, we do a lot of great things out there. We didn’t come up with the win, just little areas, like I said, turnovers, fouling, but it’s definitely there. We have guys, everyone’s back this game healthy. Not sure what happened to CP and GP yet, hope they’re fine but the blueprint’s definitely there, as long as we stay connected, play together. The sky’s the limit for us.”
11:53 on if his game is starting to come around: “Yeah, just getting into a good rhythm, trying to put in extra work too and hopefully it’ll translate to the court. Just tonight it didn’t and just gotta stay consistent and keep it going.”
12:14 on giving up free throws and turnovers, what the solutions are and why they haven’t been able to execute them: “I mean, we’ve talked about it, but in the midst of the game, a lot of stuff happens. People get caught up in certain things and Sacramento’s a great team. They play fast, they come at you, they’re aggressive, they’re downhill. We’ve got to be disciplined. That’s all of us. I had a couple of silly fouls tonight and let them to the foul line. It’s a group thing that we’ve got to work on and get better at.”
13:01 on if that was one of his better first halves this year and where things went right: “For sure, for sure. Just staying aggressive, mixing up my game, whether it’s hitting some threes, playing in the mid-range. Just have a complete game and staying on the boards.”
