All the transcripts below are lightly edited, meaning there’s mistakes, but it’s good enough to get the gist of them, plus in reverse chronological order (most recent first). Steve Kerr, Klay Thompson, Brandin Podziemski and Stephen Curry all took the postgame podium. I’ve also attached the game notes at the bottom.
We have a behind-the-scenes video plus a bonus pregame interviews upload coming soon, but that will have to post on this website tomorrow, along with the Portland coverage per usual. And then, there’s also the previously promised insider info on Podziemski, probably after that one.
STEVE POSTGAME BKN-GSW
0:00 Steve, how would you describe the way the fourth quarter unfolded in the conclusion?
Favorably. We won. Okay. You want me to expand on that? I thought they set a tone right away. we have a lazy inbounds pass to start the fourth our ball. you gotta I think we’re up eight. Maybe I can’t remember what it was exactly.
Six, fourth quarter, like you, you get the ball first and again, get something good, get a bucket, get a stop and, they haven’t got an immediate steal because we were just careless with, against their pressure. So they took it to us and, obviously, got the lead there, early in the fourth.
So, love the way our guys responded. I think, games like these, when you’re, in a little bit of a rut, you just have to find a way to win, and that’s the only way to, get your momentum back. And, so I’m very proud of the guys for the way they fought and, came back. And Steph was Sublime down the stretch. That was unreal. I mean, we’ve seen him do this over and over again, but it never ceases to amaze me what what that guy is capable of.
1:00 What does it do for a team when Steph? Scores 12 consecutive points while this game is going back and forth.
Well, it gave us confidence, and I think that’s the biggest issue when you’re struggling.
You’re maybe emotionally spent a little bit. you have to find confidence. And, so I think Steph just infuses us with confidence.
1:23 Hi, Steve. Brandin. Also, I mean, during this scoring spurt for Steph and also Klay’s big threes, Brandin had a couple key rebounds and a steal. And how much is he just doing the little things on on both ends?
That’s why he’s out there. he’s, one of the reasons we want him out there with staff is to give us another playmaker, another ball handler. the play you referenced, I thought was one of the Biggest of the game where Steph got trapped. He kicked it to Brandon and Brandon found clay on the wing for that three huge play.
And that’s an example of why he’s out there. three steals. he’s just in the mix. He’s like one of those guys who’s just always in the right spot because he sees the game and he anticipates. So Brandin is, earning his stripes here in his rookie year.
2:19 You were talking about the fourth quarter to Monte’s question. You guys have played a lot of close tight games. Darryl said it’s your 12th consecutive clutch game. What allowed you guys to close out this game versus some of those other ones that you’ve dropped?
Steph.
You want me to elaborate on that? If you want more words.
Yeah, I mean, I gotta give credit to, to JK. He came out maybe the four minute mark of the third didn’t go back to him because wigs was playing well, and I decided to stay with wigs and, and then we inserted him for that last possession, and he he got a hand on that, that shot from bridges.
So, J. K. Stayed ready and made a huge winning play with the block down the stretch. And, that that and, Steph just taking over. it’s really key.
3:11 Steph was kind of outwardly emotional tonight, maybe more than usual. Did you feel from him, like, a point in the season that he kind of needed to power you guys to a win? That he Just kind of felt emotionally he kind of needed to power you guys to a win tonight?
Yeah, Steph’s, He’s he’s been through a lot. the last few days with with the Draymond news and, he’s had to carry this team. Let’s be honest, for the first quarter of the season, we just haven’t been able to build momentum and find lineups that are clicking.
And so he’s carried us. And then the Draymond news. I think he was emotionally spent the last last few days, frankly. And it was a slow start tonight. Didn’t look like he had it. And then as he’s done so often, he flipped the switch and, you can kind of see it when it happens, right away. And, he was incredible.
And that’s what we needed. As I said this, we’re in a bit of a, we rut and your best players have to get you outta that.
4:20 Steve, it looked like tonight was one of those nights he had the ball, he was creating. And I know that’s been a perennial debate, but how much of that is like Steph deciding, all right, I got a matchup. Let me take this. Cause I’m sure if he says, go give me the ball, you won’t resist him, right?
I always want him with the ball and, the way they were guarding, I mean, they were, they were kind of switching everything, and then they started trapping him at the end. So the biggest thing is, for everybody to make themselves available.
You know if he’s running pick and roll or I so and they send two at him, everyone’s got to be ready to make themselves available for the past because if you can get it out now, it’s four on three. And it’s one of Steph’s. I think one of his sort of underrated gifts is his ability to get the ball out of traffic to create advantages for us.
5:13 Is the team getting better?
Yeah, I think they’re getting better, I think, we’ve worked on it quite a bit. And, we’re running more pick and roll this year than I think than ever. And, so teams are sending more traps and, they’re and hits like they were when they were doubling him at half court. And, so everyone’s just got to be ready to get their proper spacing and then to make the right play from there.
5:41 Steve, as you mentioned, Steph’s carried this team at times, many times. How, as great as he was tonight, how conscious or worried are you about too much burden on him? I mean, and along those lines, the last two games since Draymond’s suspension, for Klay to play like he has, how sort of urgent is it that Steph gets help going forward?
It’s definitely a factor. We need guys to step in and help him. He’s been, as I said earlier, he’s been carrying us for much of the season. So, it’s fun to see, Brandin plays so well. I thought Wiggs came off the bench and really gave us a lift. And obviously, as you mentioned, Klay the last couple games.
So, we’re getting there. We just, we needed to win this one. And, I feel like, we have an opportunity now to settle into the season a little bit and build some momentum.
6:38 Brandin being out there with Steph, it seems like they have some rapport or synergy. How much, how do you, how much, how do you see the way they had been working together these last couple of games?
Well, it’s one of the reasons that was the way we decided to go when we changed the lineup. Brandin is, he’s a playmaker. He reads the game. He sees it. He just, he makes the game easier for Steph because you got a secondary ball handler, passer, and a shot maker, too. So, he’s a big, big part of, this revamped lineup is getting Brandin out there with Steph.
7:18 Sorry if you’ve covered this already, but what are some reasons why you’re running more pick and roll this year than ever?
I think, getting Chris Paul. He’s obviously a phenomenal pick and roll player and then just personnel. the off ball stuff has traditionally been, most effective with certain rosters, where especially teams with a lot of passing, and vision and, and so, I think this year’s team is more suited to play more, more spread pick and roll. And that’s why we’re doing that.
7:55 Does that change at all without Draymond? Not really. Not really. I mean, obviously dream on’s, incredible in pick and roll, but, we’re still gonna run it with, with the other guys too.
Thanks.
KLAY & BPODZ POSTGAME BKN-GSW
Klay, what’s it feel like to win one of these games?
“Obviously, there’s been a lot of close games this season, and tonight you guys found a way to win it. it feels really good, but, it doesn’t mean much if we don’t go up to Portland tomorrow and take care of business, so, but it does feel good to kind of lift a lid off this losing streak and try to start a new streak that culminates in wins.”
Klay, who had more rookie confidence, you or Brandin Podziemski?
“Mm, BP’s pretty confident, and that’s probably one of his best attributes, honestly, is his belief in himself. I saw that this past summer. But, I don’t know. I was pretty confident, too. I was shooting some shots back then. I’m shooting the same shots I do, did as a rookie, so that’s a, that’s a, that’s a wash.”
You’ve seen Steph do this a few times over the course of your career. What was it like tonight watching him go to work?
He willed us to victory. We appreciate him. Tomorrow, hopefully, we can help shoulder the load a little more. And, he was special tonight. I mean, just his ability to create shots. I mean, just to be able to Make shots from all the floor at the rim and the mid range from.
35 ft is something probably will never see again in the league, so. I’m grateful for Steph’s performance tonight. It really put us over the edge. 54 the last two games. Oh wow. It’s hard. Hopefully keep that up.”
Is the shot feeling better?
“It was great. Tonight I had like four open looks, though, and I forced a few shots. So I still have another level to get to. I really believe that.”
How conscious are you, I mean, of not having too much burden on Steph? You’ve obviously shot well the last couple games. How important is, especially with Draymond out, that there’s balance and then that it’s not just Steph?
“I’d say the last three or four I shot well, so it’s a good trend, but Yeah, strength in numbers. It’s pretty self explanatory. And I know we’ll all step up. We’ll help him. We’re more than capable and I know, it’s coming. It really is. It’s early still. And, really big performances, not just from myself, but from the whole squad. They’re coming.”
And how do you sort of generally feel about the new look starting unit with Brandin in there and J.K.? it seems like you guys got pretty good synergy in the first two games and, what’s that feel like, I guess, with those guys joining you and Steph and Looney?
“They both do things different, but very well. Jk is one of the best athletes in the NBA. BP showing his completeness to his game. I mean, his ability to rebound, hit threes, floaters. Very uncanny for a rookie… And, I mean, I feel for Wiggs. I know how competitive he is. I know he’s going to be back. He’s going to help us win so many ball games. And that man who helped us win a championship and became an all star, he’s still in there and he’s got huge, huge days coming. I know, I just know him too well to ever lose doubt in my guy Wiggs.
Nice. Heads up. Oh, that’s a good plane right there.”
Brandin, how would you describe sort of the vibe when stuff gets going the way he did in the fourth and being out there with him when that happens?
“It’s really easy for us. We kind of just get out of his way and just let him do his thing. down the stretch when he gets it going, we try to, Bring in the weakest defender from their team and give him a switch. And then obviously you saw sometimes they blitzed and then we got the ball out and made a play happen. So when it’s rolling, it’s super easy for us. We just try to get a weak matchup on him and just let him go to work.”
Did you feel almost like an increased level of focus and emotion from him tonight to kind of get you guys this one?
“Yeah, he changed his whole routine up. Obviously he was out there right after I walked through today, just locked in and focused on, just winning and, obviously that was showing in his play tonight. and I think our team as a collective is figuring out that it is really hard to win. maybe in years prior, it’s been easier, given the talent level.
But we’re recognizing that it’s super hard to win the NBA and we got to bring it every night. When he gets going like that, does it kind of breed confidence for you as a shooter as well? Yeah. just having like an unconscious mindset. I know him and Klay have that. And it’s something I’m trying to bring myself to. Obviously like, putting others before myself. but it’s something I’m just getting used to.”
You guys were only, called for one foul in the first quarter. How important do you think maybe defending without fouling tonight was?
“Yeah, it’s big. it lets us get out of, get, get out in transition. They can’t have a set defense, off a free throw. And it just makes things easier for us in terms of a flow purpose. when we don’t foul, it seems like our offensive numbers are way better. It gives you a knack for for being in the right place, getting the steal at the right time and just, I know some of its effort and hustle and energy, but also Steve.”
Steve Kerr said he’s always in the right place. Do you just, is it a court sense or something that’s developed or just have you always had it?
“Yeah, I think basketball is a game about positioning both offensively and defensively. And I think when you’re not as athletic as maybe like a Jonathan Kuminga, you have to kind of rely on your positioning to sort of overlook those deficiencies. and for me, just kind of being in the right spots, knowing basketball, kind of knowing what the team’s trying to get to at that certain moment, I think, just has helped me tremendously throughout my career.”
It seems like your learning curve, though, has not been super-steep as a rookie. Is that something that just the game is still? It wasn’t super fast for you, or has there been a major adjustment?
“Nah, it hasn’t been. I watch a lot of basketball. obviously got my fair share of playing so far. And, I feel like I’m a quick learner. I’m quick to learn things when it’s told to me or I see it, so I think maybe that’s my God-given gift, not athleticism. Maybe that’s what it is. but it’s got me to a good place. so I’m going to keep doing that.”
How has the new starting lineup felt for you?
“I think it’s felt good. it’s kind of given us a different dynamic. especially like when Chris comes in for me, maybe six or five minute mark, then that unit starts getting rolling. Then the starters start to trickle out. and then Wiggs off the bench has been a big time for us. He played really well tonight. And then, him taking on the biggest, him and JK switching on the biggest wings every night is big time for us.”
When this team is going through a struggle or just in general, it’s always been Steph and then Klay, Andrew, Draymond, a lot of veteran guys this year. They’ve depended a lot on yourself. Jonathan, Moses. Have the younger guys talked about kind of just how does it feel to have that a little bit more on your shoulders and that responsibility for me?
“I love it. Obviously this has been a veteran-oriented team for sure, eight, nine years now But like Steph had mentioned in LA in his postgame interview, maybe it is time for some younger guys to help To lead and it’s gonna maybe look a little different than it has in the past and that’s okay. So for us, me, Trayce, Moses and JK, we try to bring anything that the team may need any sort of thing that we lack as a team. We try to bring that.”
You hit four threes tonight. Is the shot feeling better? How much do you want that? That last one back?
“I want the last one back for sure; it felt good, but like I said, after summer league, I knew I would bounce back. It was just a little bit of an adjustment, but just being around Steph and Klay, kind of having that mindset of if I’m open, I’m going to shoot. And even sometimes if I’m not open, I’m going to shoot. has definitely worn on me for sure. And I think it’s led to pretty good results so far.”
Brandin, what would you say is the key to playing effectively with Steph? You hadn’t played with him that much the first 15 games in the last couple, obviously a lot more, but it seems like you guys have a connection out there and you’re obviously conscious of setting him up, but he’s a unique player. It’s hard to play with him for a lot of guys. Why? Why do you think it works with you two out there?
“Yeah, I think it’s kind of understanding space. If you see him, you screen for him. It’s kind of just something I think about. Gary Payton is probably the best at it. So I try to ask Gary like what he does to him. Kind of get him open, get himself open and more oftentimes than not, if you, screen for Steph, you’re going to be the one open.
Obviously that happened a lot tonight, especially when he gets it going, it makes it easier. but offensively, just, giving him his space, letting him work, do his thing. And then there’s times where, you need to be conscious of where he is running around the court and then screen for him. Thank you guys.”
STEPH POSTGAME BKN-GSW
0:00 So, I understand you warmed up actually kind of early today. Was there a different reason why you decided to do early warms?
Y’all don’t miss anything. just want to change it up a little bit to get the mind and body prepared to play. Kind of messing around with tweaks, every so often throughout the year.
But, just a call of. Yeah, just trying to get some space, before the game, a little bit more time to kind of get, get right and paid off.
0:40 What was the mindset when you came into the game with 840 to go?
I mean, make shots, obviously try to be aggressive, keep the game simple because we had, they’re, they’re a switching team.
They have a lot of length and I mean, I think we had some turnovers. We were trying to force stuff that wasn’t there in the third quarter play right into their hands. So I just try to make it, as simple as possible, pick and roll and trying to get the ball moving that way. Obviously, I hit some shots, but, yeah, just be aggressive as much as you can attack, where the where the gaps were. Yeah. I obviously live with the shots that I take every night, and it went in at night.
1:39 Did you realize in the fourth quarter that you made every shot? Were you aware of that? Or is that something that just —?
I’m very aware, yes. Yes.
1:50 You were, kind of particularly fired up when you forced that timeout in the fourth. Was that them talking at all, or was it was just —?
We needed this win extremely bad, and that was a good momentum swing, and I was a little bit tired. So I wanted them to take a time out so I could go to the bench.
2:05 Steve mentioned he thought the last few days, the last four or five days have been a little bit emotionally draining on you. Has it?
Yeah, I mean, there’s been a lot of conversations, a lot of noise around us. we had a meeting after or the day before the L. A. Game. That was important for us to kind of settle on where where we were, what was going on and everybody kind of, say how they felt. And the game of basketball presents a lot of challenges on the court, but the the friendships that you have and the connection that you have, um Especially for a guy like Draymond who we’ve been to war with for over a decade.
Like all this stuff does weigh on you because you’re trying to figure it out. You’re trying to support him, but also there’s it’s just basketball, but there is a lot of, stress that you carry to perform, while you’re kind of managing all the emotions that were going on and trying to just, be in the right place for each other. So this is it’s a lot, but every year provide presents a certain challenge and you gotta be mentally tough through it all. And I do pride myself on trying to bounce back from games or from times in the season where it gets a little low.
3:43 The way Steve put it was that you’ve carried the team for much of the season to this point. How much burden do you feel and is it magnified with Draymond out and with some of the veterans, Wiggins obviously not playing the way he usually does. Do you feel that or do you feel reenergized maybe with some of the young guys coming in and contributing the way they have?
We’re a team, man.
This is, I have a job to do. Again, I prepare myself mentally and physically to go do it every night and have done that for a long time. But it’s not just me. I can’t go win a game by myself. I can play well and I have to play well. I know that. But I don’t win the game by myself. So, I guess both to your question, like, there’s definitely a pressure and I live for those type of moments.
But there’s guys getting an opportunity to step up and we’re learning a lot about ourselves as we go. And confidence is starting to build this one game. We got to try to win tomorrow the same kind of energy. So that’s how I approach it. I think I told ourselves, I told the team before the game, we have to be able to get lost in the game as much as you can because with all the stuff that’s going on, you can put a little bit too much pressure on yourself or get a little ahead of yourself on trying to get the results without just, enjoying the process. So that was my only message and I got lost in the game tonight.
5:13 What was the emotions you were feeling at the end of this game?
I mean, the first one of the buzzer went off. You could see that you were like, you felt a certain way. We haven’t won in a while. So it was nice to, get over to get over the hump, get to the finish line with a win.
It’s crazy. It sounds with all that we’ve accomplished. I told Anthony on I think it was you on, But every day of Thursday, like, I don’t know the answer to how we solve the season. Let’s just win on Saturday. And we did that.
5:50 Steph, how much do you appreciate the little things Brandin does on both ends?
He had a handful of key rebounds and steals, during your scoring flurry that really mattered. And he said the learning curve to the NBA has not been It’s huge for him because he has had a knack for, for doing this stuff and being in the right place and making up for what he says is a lack of athleticism by, by, by doing all this stuff.
Yeah, you, some, some of the stuff that he does, you, you can’t teach as a field of everything you just said, being in the right place, anticipating, plays, hustle. I said he’s a master right now. The things that you can control in the game of basketball, just trying to make the right play, giving an extra effort, like the will to impact the game.
So those intangibles are huge. And like I said, as a rookie trying to figure out where your shots are going to come from on a night to night basis offensively, Those are the bonuses, like a night like tonight where he actually made his, made shots in LA, it didn’t go his way, but he still made his presence felt, so keep doing that and he’ll get rewarded for it.
7:08 Do you sense Klay heating up a little bit?
Yeah, and a lot of it is because, I think he’s really committed to, the patience I know he still claims, we shoot crazy shots all the time, but there’s a patience that comes with letting the game come to you. he got to like clean looks in the first half off of, some good ball movement.
And when those start going in, then the rest of the game opens up for him. So he’s been making the right play. When he’s getting trapped or pressured on pin downs or wherever he is on the court, getting rid of it. Had a good play to, to, to loon last game to Dario tonight on a drop down pass because he knows it’s going to come back to him.
So I like that groove and nobody’s worried about clay making shots. It’s just, I was trying to create the right type of shots.
8:05 Steph, to follow up on Janie’s question. What’s it like playing with Brandon? You haven’t been on the court with him a ton until the last few games and now you’re on the court together a lot and it seems like you guys have a good synergy and he’s obviously conscious of where you are and when you got hot, he set you up a couple of times. How do you guys sort of mesh and connect on the court?
Just making the right basketball plays. There’s a feeling of flow, especially the way that we play where the ball moves.
You trust that if you give it, you give, get rid of it, somebody’s gonna get a good look or the right person in that position is gonna get the right shot. He, we ran a play in front of our bench, pick and roll, he back cut, I hit him, instead of trying to force something up, he just kicked it to, I think it was Dario, who was open, I think they swung it, and he got another shot in the corner on the other side.
That’s just good basketball because I trusted him to, on a cut, he was open. I passed it, he passed it, open guy, he finished his cut. Like, simple basketball, but it’s hard to do consistently because you have to trust each other and the ball has to move. And, again, for a guy who’s, is he 20 years old? That’s, that’s impressive.
9:29 Steph, I know they were honoring, Monta Ellis for being here. Did you have a chance to see him? I know you guys kind of go back when you first got here. It was a little bit of a growing pains between you and he, but was it nice to, to, to kind of catch up with Monte today?
Oh, for sure. He’s a Warrior legend. He should get a standing ovation and love everywhere he goes in the Bay whenever he gets to come around because of what he meant to the organization, obviously that way we believe team and, I know there was when he got traded, there was kind of some rocky reception for Joe (Lacob) and all that.
And like there’s a lot of emotions, but He deserves his flowers for what he meant to the to the organization to, the fact that I’ve got to play with him for two and a half years. and well, we’re at a christmas with the courage of my learn play event yesterday. It’s 11th year. We’ve done that.
And my wife was answering a question about what it means to show up in Oakland and give back and meet the people where they are, in any way that you can. And she answered it. Surprised me. She brought up Monta and his wife, Anika, because when I was a rookie, they invited us to their foundation event.
It was the M. E. Eight Foundation. They’re doing a turkey drive, and I was like the first time I actually got out into the community in Oakland to kind of see What they were doing and it was kind of the seed that was planted for us. So now 15 years later, we’re, kind of doing it our way and it’s kind of cool that we didn’t know he was gonna be here and next day she mentions his name, I get to see him. So it’s kind of cool to chop it up with him and, Like I said, give him his flowers
11:19 As a quick follow to that, I think he actually originated that tunnel shot, which has become your trademark. Did you see him do it one day and then decided you wanted to start for sure?
Yeah, he should do it backwards.
He was showing off. I did. we did his during shootaround. I tried to do it during the game, so I have, I have a time to take that much risk, but he definitely, he was Mississippi bullet. He was unbelievable player. I met a lot of organizations, so it’s dope to see him.
11:52 Steph, up in Sacramento tonight, Keegan Murray started 12-of-13 from three.
He what?
Yeah, in the first three quarters. You’ve hit 13 in the game before.
How many did he finish with?
it’s still going on.
Ah, he got hit with it. Ha, ha. Klay, Klay hypothetically had 18 in Chicago if he would have stayed in the game. Is it still going on?
This is this is dope.
He’s still at 12.
Pull it up.
12:24 How would you just describe that record just in terms of its difficulty to achieve, you and Klay have both been up there. I mean, when somebody the team knows you’re hot they’re gonna start to shade your way take, your looks away.
You gotta — he’s sustained that over the course of the game. 12 or 13 is nuts. He’s getting them up. He’s getting it. How much time is left? Stay tuned. sorry. No, but it’s it’s Yeah, we’ll see. But it is tough because you have to find good looks. Obviously stay hot. The whole game. Klay was wild because he got, I think, he was 14 for like 21 or something like that in three quarters. I was, took me the whole game when I hit 13. honestly, I’m surprised still that it’s still 14 because of how many threes are getting getting up these days. But it’s cool that Klay still got it for now. All right, I’m gonna go watch that game.
