The media came up with all sorts of reasons Kevin Durant didn’t want to come back to the Warriors. Even Golden State’s head coach, Steve Kerr, said he understood why Durant wouldn’t want to come back and play for the Warriors. He said,
“I don’t blame Kevin Durant one bit for not wanting to rerun things here. He took so much s*** for like, ‘Oh, you’re jumping on the bandwagon’… So why would he want to face all that B.S. again?”
Durant however, recently refuted Kerr’s comments. In his recent Malika Andrews interview, he left the door open for a possible Warriors reunion in the future. Let’s look at why a Durant trade to the Warriors could be a real possibility this offseason.
KD’s Recent Comments Leave Door Open For Reunion With Former Team
Durant’s Malika Andrews Interview
In the new age of NBA media, every player has an opportunity to tell their truth. This is exactly what Durant did in his recent interview with Andrews. Durant set the record straight on exactly why he didn’t want to reunite with Stephen Curry in Golden State at the trade deadline. Durant said,
“I just didn’t want to get traded midway through the season. It was nothing against my time with the Warriors, or I heard it was because I don’t like Draymond. At the end of the day, I just didn’t want to move. And I wanted to see it through with my team in Phoenix. And see what we can do through the rest of the season, so I’m glad I’m still there.”
Is the Door Open for a Warriors Kevin Durant Reunion?
Durant’s comments to Andrews are certainly interesting. He very clearly didn’t shut down the idea of leaving the Suns in the offseason. Durant specifically said that he wanted to finish the rest of the season in Phoenix without speaking about finishing out his contract there. He also gave his best reason for not wanting to join the Warriors as not wanting to move midseason. That means this offseason, he could be totally open to the idea.
It is hard to blame him after what happened over the trade deadline. The Suns shopped him, and it isn’t clear whether he was asked about his willingness to be traded before they did it. Now, many around the league are thinking that Durant could be on the move this summer.
Why Durant Would Go Back to the Warriors
Durant should definitely consider going back to the Warriors. Nobody needs to remind him of the incredible success he had in the Bay, and his chances of winning another NBA championship are getting slimmer by the season. Teaming up with Curry again in Golden State may be one of the best opportunities he has.
The Warriors’ addition of Jimmy Butler makes the Warriors an even more attractive destination for Durant. Both he and the Warriors may be more willing to take a risk on a Durant trade after signaling to the league they are prepared to go all-in on the end of Curry’s prime. Because the Warriors signed Butler to an extension, if the Warriors were to trade for Durant, he, Curry, and Butler would all have their contracts in line. This could be the perfect last hurrah for all three aging veterans.
