Rounding up all Warriors and NBA related news for Friday, October 25th.
In today’s Dub Hub:
- Former Warrior Klay Thompson scores six three-pointers in Dallas season opener, breaks a Mavericks’ record for most threes in a debut game.
- NBA announces scoring error for the Warriors-Blazers game on Wednesday.
- Pacers center James Wiseman tore his achilles, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Klay Thompson’s departure from the Golden State Warriors marked a significant moment in franchise history, closing the chapter on a 13-year tenure with the team that resulted in four championships. After reports of Thompson’s discontent with his situation in Golden State, the Warriors and Mavericks orchestrated a blockbuster sign-and-trade this past offseason, officially ending an era that Warriors fans will never forget.
Now with the new season officially underway, the trade seems to be paying off for both teams as the Warriors and Mavericks have gone off to promising starts. In Thursday’s opener for the Mavs, Thompson wasted no time making an impact, scoring 22 points while hitting 6-of-10 from three-point range. His six threes set a new Mavericks record for most by any player in their debut game with the team.

For Warriors fans, watching Thompson catch fire is nothing new, but seeing it in a Mavericks jersey will take some getting used to. It also doesn’t help that the Mavericks’ social media team has embraced their opportunities to troll Dub Nation whenever they can (Steph Curry, please take note).

Despite the change in uniform, Thompson’s legacy with the Warriors remains untouchable. He will always be remembered as a franchise icon, and his success in Dallas should be worth celebrating — just not when he’s facing Golden State.

Warriors News:
Will Klay Thompson work with Dallas Mavericks? First look indicates yes | The Athletic
Such is why a noted symbolism exists, poetry even, in Thompson being a Maverick. This choice he made, choosing to sign with Dallas, feels a bit like a low-percentage heave, a hoist with as much risk of missing as it does splashing triumphantly.
How so? Success requires him to do in Dallas what he couldn’t do, and wouldn’t do, in the Bay Area. Only with more pressure for immediate returns, no grace stored up from prior heroics, in an environment that could potentially clash with his ethos.
But this is Klay Thompson of whom we speak. The jaw-dropper. The tough-shot taker. Owner of Rancho Santa Margarita’s biggest marbles ever. Who bailed out a dynasty. Whose legacy includes astonishing feats. Thompson never met a shot he couldn’t make. Never played a game he couldn’t win. Never heard a doubter he couldn’t silence.
NBA acknowledges error, adjusts Warriors-Trail Blazers score | ESPN
The NBA found a scoring error, one where the Warriors weren’t credited with a free throw that De’Anthony Melton made with 2 minutes left in the third quarter. The league revealed the miscue Thursday, changing the final score from 139-104 to 140-104.
Statisticians at the game recorded Melton as having missed both free throws in that sequence, even though Melton made the first one.

Warriors’ No. 2 options behind Steph emerge in season-opening win | NBC Sports Bay Area
Hield is new to the offense, but he’s built for it in much the same way as Thompson.
“Tonight was my night,” Hield who shot 8-of-12 from the field his Golden State debut. “The next night it can be JK. Steph is always Steph. He’s world class. I just want to take advantage of my opportunities, run the floor and try to keep the floor open for Steph and other guys to be special.”

NBA News:
Ex-Clippers staffer sues, says he was fired over Kawhi concerns | ESPN
Later that season, Leonard tore his right meniscus in a playoff series against the Phoenix Suns. After that injury, Shelton said he wrote a complaint to Frank about his diminished role and how the team had managed Leonard’s health. In it, he said he noted that the “mishandling of Kawhi Leonard’s injury and return-to-play protocol has been mind-blowing” and that “the disregard for his recovery process is unacceptable.” Shelton also said the Clippers had placed more of an emphasis on Leonard’s productivity than his recovery.
The following day, Frank responded, stating, “We take your concerns very seriously and will promptly move forward with an investigation.”
What Is Victor Wembanyama’s Ceiling in Year 2? | The Ringer
One of the key questions about Wembanyama’s production this season is what kinds of opportunities he will receive. It should help that he’ll spend all of his minutes playing with real point guards in Chris Paul, who has a history of creating phenomenal looks for centers, and Tre Jones.
But while Wembanyama might enjoy an increased quality of opportunities this season, his quantity of opportunities might not increase as much. Playing on a talent-starved team as the clear no. 1 option last season, Wemby became only the sixth rookie on record with a usage rate of at least 30 percent. But four of the other five used fewer possessions as sophomores.

On the Warriors, Trail Blazers, and Gaza
I remember NBA players staring down ownership and threatening to walk away from the playoffs because they saw injustice in the world and were tired of acting like it was normal to be unaffected.
The NBA regular season is back. Every fan base has hope that the start of a new season brings. Maybe a championship. Maybe just the exciting development of a young player. Maybe an unexpected playoff appearance.
But maybe the 2024-25 season will bring NBA players back to social justice movements, and back to deploying the power they have for those in need.
