• The Warriors sent the gobsmacking sum of $5.8 million to the Indiana Pacers to get the least valuable of the Pacers’ three 2024 second-round picks (essentially either Milwaukee’s or Cleveland’s, likely to be in the mid-50s). In the process, Golden State saved itself about $12 million in tax penalties by offloading Joseph’s $2 million contract. In exploratory trade talks with the Golden State Warriors centered on Caruso, league sources said the Bulls inquired about Jonathan Kuminga’s availability. That was rebuffed, and the Bulls made clear in talks with all teams that they didn’t want to trade Caruso, especially for a package on perhaps other young pieces like Moses Moody.
DUNLEAVY POST-TRADE PRESSER
• Mike Dunleavy, Jr. presser: “We explored a lot and frankly there wasn’t a lot out there that we thought could improve us significantly at an appropriate price. For that reason, we more or less decided to stand pat. Part of it is that we still believe in this roster.” (Anthony Slater, Shayna Rubin)
• On the team as-is: “I think if we play to the maximum of our ability, I think we can play with any team in this league. I think some of the games we’ve played in have shown that… if everyone plays to their max ability … we’re there with any team in the league.” (Zena Keita)
• Dunleavy said Jonathan Kuminga was as “Virtually. I mean, as untouchable as guys can be in this league. He’s certainly in that level… didn’t see a scenario where Jonathan wouldn’t be on our team after this deadline.” (Anthony Slater, Kerith Burke, Shayna Rubin) https://x.com/nbcswarriors/status/1755720039985197308?s=46
GSW-IND PREGAME NOTES

• Klay Thompson is out tonight in Indianapolis. Late addition to injury report. Illness. Brandin Podziemski will start in his place, per Kerr pregame GSW-IND. (Anthony Slater, Shayna Rubin, Kendra Andrews)
STEVE/WIGGS/KLAY/LES POSTGAME
We’ve talked all year but you guys haven’t really been able to get those blowout wins. So how good does this feel to put together?
STEVE KERR POSTGAME GSW-PHI: “Yeah, it’s a great win. And really important to take care of business and keep the minutes down going to Indianapolis tomorrow for a tough game. So really I was so Impressed with our guys’ defense and the connection. The whole group just played with great energy and it just really feels like this team is coming together. I’m excited.”
What did you see from Wiggins tonight? What did you like about the performance?
“It was great. He obviously shot the ball well but rebounded, 10 boards, four offensive, played defense on Maxey. We put him on the toughest guy and just played with the right energy, the right spirit. The whole group did, just thought everybody came out and competed and defended without fouling and that allowed us to get out in transition.”
How big of a difference in Klay’s demeanor, energy, performance did you see from this game compared to last?
“He just looks so relaxed out there and Klay just puts a lot of pressure on himself sometimes. He goes through stretches of the season where he just expects to make every shot and he’s hard on himself. And when he plays like he did tonight, just under control, moving the ball and that’s the right thing to do, shooting when he’s open. He’s a fantastic player. So I loved Klay’s game tonight, very much under control and just just fit in with the group and it was perfect.”
Looney, this is probably one of his better games in a while. It was a plus 15. Just what did you get from that?
“Looney was great. We didn’t go to him until the top of the second and he immediately changed the game with his defense, his rebounding. I just I have so much faith in Loon even though he’s been a little bit out of the rotation; at least from a minute standpoint he’s not playing as much. But he just always stays ready and he always reminds you of how good he is. It’s never flashy. It’s just making solid play after solid play. And that’s what he did tonight.”
When you say you see this team coming together in your pregame, you seem to have kind of an optimistic tone on things. Where specifically besides the win column are you seeing?
“Well, defense has been better over the last couple of weeks. I don’t know what the rating is but I’m sure it’s dramatically better than where we were before that, before this stretch. I like the starting lineup. I like JK and Wiggs together. Everybody on this team has just overcome whatever individual obstacles have come their way and you can always tell as a coach, you can tell if your team is connected, if they have the right energy, if they’re supporting each other, if they care about each other. And I love this group. I love this team. They’re staying with it. They’ve been through so much both individually and as a team and they’re just connected and forging ahead and I really feel great about the path we’re on. Thanks you guys.”
ANDREW WIGGINS POSTGAME GSW-PHI LOCKER ROOM on if he pays attention to the trade deadline: “Not really. Not really. I just hoop. Yeah. I just hoop and I just worry about what I can control.”
Is your preference to stick here through the deadline?
“I love the fans, culture, all my teammates.”
Do you feel like this team — Steve said it tonight, he feels like even if y’all make no moves, he still thinks, despite where you are in the standings, this team can make a run. Do you feel like that?
“For sure. For sure. I feel like we can, finding something good; it’s been working for us and as long as everyone buys into what we got going on…”
Do you see your name come up in trade conversations with the deadline? I’m not saying that’s going to happen but it’s different than ever before.
KLAY THOMPSON POSTGAME GSW-PHI LOCKER ROOM: “I don’t partake in NBA discourse on the day. That’s such a waste of energy. And at the end of the day whether I’m wearing a Dubs uniform or another uniform, I’m going to be myself. I’m going to be one and I’m going to be KT.”
I assume that the preference remains to stay here even beyond this season right?
“That is correct. Good assessment.”
Steve said in pregame that even if no trades are made, he feels like this group still has what it takes to make a run, even though obviously you guys are sitting in 11th right now. Where is that level of optimism even from you, this group that’s in here can still make noise?
“I see Steph Curry. I see Draymond. If you go home and you check our playoff record as a trio and you have what we have, champions. I believe. I will always believe. It’s a long season. So I will always believe we can always make a run, especially when we’re all suited up.”
How nice has the last two felt for you, individually but also two wins?
LESTER QUINONES POSTGAME GSW-PHI: “Oh it just feels great to be out there actually playing, getting my opportunity to show what I can do out there and I’m just taking advantage of the minutes that I’m getting, whether I’m in for two minutes, one minute, 10 minutes, just every minute I’m out there trying to be as solid as I can and just do what they ask me.”
How do you feel yourself progressing as you’ve gone for minutes? Where do you feel yourself growing the most?
“I feel like learning from my mistakes, little turnovers here and there, kind of mishaps where I’m on the wrong spacing. I feel like once I do it once that’s when I kind of get it and it’s like I’m getting more comfortable out there on certain reads. Like I said, once I do it once or it doesn’t go a certain way, I kind of know what to do the next time.”
You guarded Maxey quite a bit tonight. Just how much do you enjoy challenging and guarding other top players?
“Oh it’s great. It feels amazing, man. That’s what comes with playing for Penny (Hardaway) three years at Memphis. He’s just a defensive-minded coach, bringing that defense, that grand grind, every time kind of picking up full. I feel like I’m used to that scattered type of play style where it’s full court pick up, turn them, turn them, rotate out of rotations and just scrambling. I feel like I’m comfortable most with that defense.”
We’re going to get our post game guest here and we’re going to get Lester Quinones to put a headset on for us. Lester’s got the headset on. Lester, can you hear us?
LESTER QUINONES POSTGAME RADIO FROM ON-COURT: “It’s very low. Very low.”
I’ll try to yell a little bit louder but Lester first of all let me ask you about the road trip and how much fun are you having on the road trip and how gratifying is it for all the work you put in, all the time you spent, whether it be at Santa Cruz or Golden State to finally see it come to fruition?
“Oh man, it just feels great, man; thankful and blessed for the opportunity that I’m getting. This just goes to what everybody’s been telling me around the organization man. Just waiting my turn, staying patient, staying with the work, staying the course. And everything’s kind of falling into itself. So I’m just blessed and thankful for everything that I’m given right now. And I’m gonna just keep making the best of the opportunity that I have.”
And not only that but you get to play in Memphis where you were a college star. Very well-liked there. You get to play in Brooklyn right near where you grew up in Brentwood and that’s going to add some icing to the cake.
“Yeah for sure. Just being in arenas that I’m comfortable with, all three years at Memphis, all our home games were in the (FedEx) Forum. So I was comfortable there. Going back to Brooklyn I played in Barclays (Center) a couple of times. So just having all my family out there I was just in a comfort zone man. And when everything’s clicking and, like I said, I get the opportunity that I’m given, I feel like my work is going to show and I’ve definitely been working.”
What has Steve Kerr said to you lately, as to what he’s expecting of you when you come off the bench?
“Oh, just coming in, being solid. He wants me to be just as aggressive as I am in the G. So even Steph talks to me about it all the time. Some of the shots that I do have and some of the opportunities that I’m passing up on, they want me to be aggressive on those and take advantage of those the same way I would in the G. The same aggressive getting downhill, getting to the basket, making the right reads. Just doing everything and staying solid. And like I said just getting the opportunity that I’m getting and just keeping my game simple, hitting open shots, catch-and-shoots, not doing too much. And as y’all can see, playing defense, so playing both ends for sure.”
How big was this win and how big was it the fact that you guys got a win where Steph, Klay, Draymond, Wiggins, they can all rest in the fourth quarter?
“Oh, huge huge, man. When guys like us could just step up and Steve said it, he just needed that group to start the fourth out and just go out and really get it clicking, so these guys can rest for tomorrow. That’s what we’re here for. The young guys like myself, Gui, BP, Trayce. All of us are here to just come in and bring energy when those guys kind of don’t have it and just uplift everything. And we did it tonight and it was great.”
It’s a lot of fun watching you establish yourself as an NBA player on the road trip. A career high 17 tonight. Career high four assists, 13 points. Job well done, sir.
“Thank you. Thank you. Appreciate it.”
STEVE AT GSW-PHI PREGAME
What’s the status on Draymond?
STEVE KERR, PREGAME GSW-PHI: “Yeah, I expect him to play.”
Steve. You recruited Embiid and pitched well on Team USA. How disappointing was it? Go down and have surgery and be out of the time.
“Yeah, I mean, it’s disappointing regardless. We want everybody healthy. We want especially our star players in the league because they’re the ones who really drive the entertainment, and that’s what our business is. And then, for us with USA our fingers are crossed that he’ll be healthy this summer and able to play because he’s an amazing player. And we’re really excited to have him, part of the program. Six years went from just two weeks ago to now they’re facing a tough season. You can’t do that in your career with big players are down tough seasons.”
How do you, as a coach, how do you, as a team, like, go through that when you know it’s going to be kind of a tough slump in the head, I guess?
“I mean, you really have to look at this season in the big picture and recognize that there’s just going to be weird times. There’s going to be times where you go through injuries, slumps, whatever. Erik Spoelstra said something, they lost seven in a row a couple weeks ago. He said it’s hard to explain, but it’s just one of those weird occurrences during the year and you just have to keep plugging away and you have to fight your way out of it. And that’s, we all go through it. And right now, obviously, the Sixers are really short handed. And so we’re expecting Nick to throw the kitchen sink at us tonight. He’s got a lot of tricks in his bag. they’re gonna put a lot of pressure on us. They’re gonna come out fighting because that’s the way you get out of a rut like this one.”
How do Steph and LeBron hold up their part of the bargain for so long. Why do you feel they are?
“They have been so effective for so long. Well, they’re both kind of aliens. I mean, when you think about it, people just don’t. don’t really get better with age. Most people don’t, at the age that they are. But with each one, they addressed their weaknesses mid-career and really worked hard. In Steph’s case, it was physical strength. He put, you look at a picture of him now compared to 10 years ago. It’s pretty dramatic. So he got stronger and stronger in order to withstand the rigors of the season and to go up against all these offenses that are trying to target him in order to wear him down. LeBron, you look at his shooting now compared to 10 years ago. It’s some believe about halfway through his career. He just completely changed the narrative. We all, at that time early in his career, he just went under every screen and just begged him to shoot. Now he’s like a 40 percent three point shooter. so both guys are just maniacally driven to get better, to keep going. They love it so much. and they were blessed by the genes that they were born with.”
Are you, I mean, are you hoping that this Olympics, that maybe another young face, American face can kind of step forward and kind of take on some of that leadership responsibility to come with just being a great player to lead? It goes beyond just what you get performed to the floor. Are you hoping that this summer you can kind of, kind of flush her in that mix?
“Yeah, I mean, it looks like this summer will be a little bit of a last hurrah for, Some of the guys on the team and you wouldn’t expect Steph and LeBron and Kevin to all be there in 2028. You never know. But there, there, it does seem like it’s a time where some of the younger guys could be transitioning into leadership roles. And having coached the young group last summer in the World Cup. I mean, the guys who jump out. to me are Anthony Edwards, Tyrese Haliburton. Those guys were, Fantastic and really good leaders. Jalen Brunson was great. I mean, it was such a fun group to work with and such good guys. Mikal Bridges. And they’re all young rising stars in this league. And that’s obviously what USA Basketball is looking for, the best of the best. But guys who can also lead and be part of something bigger than themselves.”
What perspective do you feel like you gained from the USA basketball experience so far in the last summer and what not?
“Every coaching experience is a good one. When you coach in FIBA, you see a different game, you see a different style. And you, you have to adapt to that, but you, you, you see influences from literally from all over the world, whereas the NBA, it becomes a copycat league and you play the same teams and why you’re watching the same teams and you get used to, your opponents and what coaches, different coaches are doing. So, FIBA really exposes you to, a lot of, A lot of differences and things that you can, maybe add to your own team. And it’s a different game, too, in terms of the rules and kind of the tournament format, one and done. so it’s a lot of fun.”
Any extra level of tension around you guys next to the trade deadline in the past years?
“Not really. The guys have been great. Everybody is committed and playing hard, playing together. And there hasn’t been a whole lot of chatter. I know there’s a few guys’ names being mentioned, but there hasn’t been a whole lot of talk. So, I always say I don’t really expect anything to happen. Usually when something does happen, it’s a surprise. maybe there are exceptions, but it’s usually a whole lot of chatter and then not much happens.”
You’ve said a few times you don’t expect you guys to do anything. Is that just, like you said, just that your natural state or is it more, through talking to Mike, surveying the situation, you just don’t think anything’s out there for you guys?
“Well, yeah, I mean, I’ve spoken with Mike. He was on the trip and went home and spoken with him every day the last few days. So there’s always conversations that he has with other people around the league, and he shares those conversations. And for every 100 proposals, only one probably actually happens. So I’m just kind of used to this by now. I don’t know how many trades we’ve made. I know one year, the year we had the worst record in the league, we made a bunch of trades to get under the tax, and that made perfect sense. And so that was why we were expecting deals that year. But every other year pretty much, it didn’t feel like anything was gonna happen in most years. Nothing did… the guys who are here, they’re an incredibly accomplished group. We’ve got some exciting young players and we’ve got a good group there. Like I said, they’re really committed, every guy on our team has really overcome a lot Individually this year, you know being taken out of the starting lineup and being injured and bouncing back young players who have emerged through hard work and patience and I’m just really enjoying coaching this team and It is a long haul, as I mentioned earlier, and I feel like this group can do something special. I really do. So, if we don’t do anything tomorrow, then we feel like we’ve got a good group that we can push forward.”
What does the injury to Embiid might mean to Team USA, and his availability?
“Yeah, yeah, of course, but there’s not a whole lot that we can do about it, so he and I texted the last couple of days and I’m hoping he’s here. I don’t know if he’s gonna be here tonight but I’d like to say a little bit that we’re hoping that he’s healthy and ready to go and if not, then obviously we’ll have to replace him.”
There’s been a lot of talk about the 65-game threshold for MVP and things like that in relation to Imbi’s injury. Have you noticed guys forcing it a little bit extra to make sure they hit that threshold? Do you think there’s extra pressure on players to make sure that they can get to that point?
“I can’t really speak for any other players. So I, I don’t, I haven’t noticed it. I haven’t watched the league and said, oh that guy’s for sure playing, to, to get an award or an honor. And the hard part with it is the financial component to it. the one thing if guys are giving up an award. But you make first team all NBA or whatever, there’s, there’s huge financial ramifications and that makes it tricky. But you would hope that everybody is taking care of their bodies first. And it seems to me that if there weren’t that 65 game limit, most people who vote would kind of have it in their heads anyway, but It wouldn’t be exactly 65, but somebody plays 57 games. They’re probably not getting voted MVP, or whatever. But I understand the league’s concern about guys missing games. And so I understand the rule. It’s not ideal, but I don’t know that there’s an ideal solution.”
You said you’re expecting Nick (Nurse) to throw the kitchen sink at you tonight, given their situation. Who’s the star of Embiid’s caliber in the middle of the season, like when you guys lost Steph a couple years ago? Like, what are the biggest challenges of changing so much, like, midstream in the middle of the year? Just like, what are even the first steps that you take to account for a guy being out for that long?
“First, the first step, honestly, is getting everybody to recognize that You gotta fight your way out, when you’re on a run, when you’re missing guys, schemes and lineups don’t matter as much as competitiveness and fight. And that’s how, you have to motivate your team and get your team to understand what’s, what’s at stake and what the challenge is. if, if, if the group is playing hard, then, then the schemes can, can really matter. And so that’s always the first, first step is just getting everybody to, to fight. It’s one of the reasons you frequently see in the league when a couple of stars are out, that team wins. And a lot of the Lakers beat Boston last night, last week without. LeBron and AD, we’ve lost four or five games this last couple of years when we were facing teams that were missing multiple guys. It’s just, all these guys are in the NBA, and and sometimes when a, when a group gets its chance, gets its opportunity, and some of them don’t normally play, the, the energy and the intensity is, is really, overwhelming and and that’s, that’s what you have to try to inspire your team to, to be when you’re short handed.”

2:33:30 Cholo: Now who will pacers game plan against tomorrow… quite a conundrum for them. — How will the young Pacers respond to our weapons? How will they adjust? We shall see.
2:36:45 our wings combined: 39-16-6 and 16/28 fg — so if you divide by two 20-8-3, 8/14 fg each, this would be the envy of many a GM (but see LGW website for why Wiggs was initially in trade talks, aside from DAL and MIL needing a wing)
