NBA trade rumors are officially getting louder than ever. A recent Shams-bomb by Shams Charania took the league by storm when he reported that the Sacramento Kings are officially open to having trade conversations on their star De’Aaron Fox. One of the teams most linked in De’Aaron Fox trade rumors is the Houston Rockets. With a 32-14 record, the Rockets are having one of their best seasons in years, and some are wondering whether mixing things up is a good idea. Let’s take a look at if Houston should take a gamble and make a Fox trade.
The Houston Rockets Should Go All-In for Star Guard De’Aaron Fox
Houston Rockets Trade Rumors
Ever since the De’Aaron Fox trade rumors started, Houston was named as a likely suitor. It makes sense. The Rockets have a young up-and-coming team that is missing one key component: a star. The Rockets core is headlined by three young potential stars: Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun, and Amen Thompson. All three are around the same ages and on similar trajectories of their career.
The Rockets point guard, Fred VanVleet is the one player on their roster who doesn’t quite match the same timeline. VanVleet has been an amazing point guard and leader for the Rockets, but trading for Fox would not only give them a much-needed closer and star but also a point guard on a more similar timeline as their current core.
De’Aaron Fox Trade Rumors
Since the Shams broke the news about Fox, there have been multiple reports about his chances to land in Houston. Chris Mannix said the Rockets are a team to watch in the Fox sweepstakes. Mannix noted the trove of young players and draft assets at the Rockets’ disposal as a reason they should be watched. There is no doubt that the Rockets could put together a great package for Fox.
Then, Marc Stein reported that the Rockets plan to see what their current group can do before making any major changes. The way they are playing, it’s no wonder why the Rockets may want to keep the group together. Still, even if they were looking into a Fox trade, they likely wouldn’t want to advertise to their team that they are considering breaking it up.
The Rockets Should Risk a Fox Trade
The Rockets should trade for Fox, even if it means breaking up their current group. The one thing every true title contender needs is a closer and a star like Fox. Right now, the Rockets are good, but with Fox, they could be great. Fox is averaging 25.2 points, 6.2 assists, and 5.0 rebounds a game this season. Meanwhile, the Rockets’ current point guard VanVleet is averaging 14.9 points, 5.9 assists and 4.0 rebounds.
Even if they’d have to give up significant assets to get him, the Rockets could be one of the most dynamic and athletic teams in the league with Fox. The Rockets would improve on both ends of the floor. Getting Fox would move the Rockets from fringe contender right to true contender status. That is why they need to take the risk and get him. You never know how long a championship window lasts. Putting yourself into that title conversation should be every team’s goal.
