Can the Giants prove themselves?
The San Francisco Giants started a four-game series against the Colorado Rockies last night. Hopefully they kicked that team in purple’s butt. I’m going to assume they did, but I’m writing this about four hours before the game starts so … best of luck, I guess.
It’s the final series before Tuesday’s trade deadline. Which means it’s the team’s final chance to prove to Farhan Zaidi that they deserve to make a run this year.
The Giants could enter the deadline on a four-game winning streak, within two games of .500, staring down a series with the Oakland A’s, and looking like a team that has life. Or they could enter the deadline on a six-game losing streak, 10 games below .500, and with Zaidi calling every GM he knows.
The rumors are already picking up. The Athletic’s Andrew Baggarly has reported “serious interest” in Blake Snell, while suggesting that the team might be willing to part with almost any of their high-priced veterans. MLB Network’s Jon Morosi backed that up, saying the Giants “have indicated to teams that they’re willing to trade some of their veteran players,” while specifically mentioning the idea of trading Michael Conforto or Mike Yastrzemski to open up playing time for Luis Matos.
A trade could happen at any point. But the more the Giants play like feckless booty, the more likely a trade happens, and the more they show some semblance of competitiveness, the more likely it is that Zaidi decides to bank on the additions of healthy star pitchers turning the season around.
But it’s the final chance to prove things, one way or another. Let’s see what they’ve got.
What time do the Giants play this weekend?
The Giants have a scheduled doubleheader against the Rockies on Saturday, with games at 4:05 p.m. PT and 7:35 p.m. PT. They conclude the series on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. PT.
