Best of luck.
Every year around this time, each team in baseball releases a handful of prospects. It’s just the nature of the game. The domestic reserve limit keeps teams from hoarding players, and space is needed for Minor League signings, as well as for the additions of all the recent draftees who didn’t yet debut.
The San Francisco Giants are part of this churn. And since there’s no news with the Major League team — we’re still waiting to see what player will be released to clear space on the 40-man roster for Hall of Fame-bound pitcher Justin Verlander (assuming he passes his physical) — the Minor League releases are all we have. The Giants released seven Minor Leaguers last week, per their transaction page. Here are the seven:
- Eliam Sandoval, a 20-year old outfielder who had an 83 wRC+ in the Arizona Complex League this year, and who was signed in 2021 as an international free agent.
- Samuel Reyes, a 21-year old outfielder who did not play this year due to injury, and who was signed in 2019 as an international free agent.
- Carlos Molina, a 19-year old left-handed pitcher who had a 4.26 ERA in the Arizona Complex League this year, and who was signed in 2023 as an international free agent.
- Wilkelma Castillo, a 25-year old right-handed pitcher who had a 6.31 ERA across two levels (Arizona Complex League and High-A) this year, and who was signed in 2018 as an international free agent.
- Estanlin Cassiani, a 22-year old outfielder who had a 50 wRC+ in Low-A this year, and who was signed in 2019 as an international free agent.
- Mikell Manzano, a 22-year old right-handed pitcher who had a 3.99 ERA across three levels (Arizona Complex League, Low-A, and High-A) this year, and who was signed in 2019 as an international free agent.
- Dariel Lopez, a 22-year old left-side infielder who did not play this year (or ever for the Giants) due to injury, and who was added in the Minor League portion of the 2023 Rule 5 Draft.
Best of luck to all of them!
